Are you having trouble using Apple Pay on your iPhone? Whether itâ€™s a one-time issue or a recurring issue, Apple Pay not working issues can occur due to various reasons. For example, it could be a faulty payment terminal, conflicting iPhone settings, server-side issuesâ€¦ the list goes on.

So, here are 15 things you can try to fix Apple Pay issues on iPhone. The fixes described in this guide also apply to the iPad.

1. Use Different Terminal at Checkout

If nothing happens when you try to use Apple Pay on a contactless terminal, start by looking for the following symbols to make sure it supports Apple Pay as a payment method in the first place.

If so, the problem may be limited to the terminal only. Try requesting a different terminal to complete the purchase.

2. Hold Your iPhone Correctly

The NFC (Near Field Communication) chip on your iPhone is located next to the rear camera. If you’re still having trouble making a purchase, hold your iOS device so that it can properly interact with the terminal’s NFC reader.

3. Remove Your iPhoneâ€™s Case

An extremely bulky or rugged case can also prevent the NFC chip on your iPhone from communicating with the payment terminal. Try removing it. After that, Apple Pay should work without problems.

4. Disable Low Battery Mode

Your iPhone’s power saving mode conserves battery life by cutting down on background processes. However, this can create problems when making transactions with Apple Pay.

So if you see a yellow iPhone battery status icon, turn it off by going to General > Battery. You can always reactivate it after making a purchase.

5. Force-Quit the Wallet App

Another Apple Pay quick fix involves force signing out of the Apple Wallet app on iPhone. Just swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-tap the home button if your iPhone uses Touch ID) to bring up the app switcher. Then drag the Wallet card off the screen.

6. Restart Your iPhone

Then try restarting your iPhone. To do this, open the Settings app, go to General > Power off, and drag the power button to the right to turn off your device. Then wait 30 seconds and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

7. Check the Apple System Status

If Apple Pay still doesn’t work on your iPhone, you can check that everything is fine on the server side. So go to the Apple System Status page and check the system status next to Apple Pay. If something goes wrong, wait until Apple fixes the problem.

8. Pick Another Payment Card

Payment issues may be related to your default credit or debit card. If possible, use another card to complete the purchase. To do this, simply tap the default card at checkout to switch between cards. If the issue occurs while using your Apple Watch, simply scroll down to select a different card.

9. Activate Face ID/Touch ID for Apple Pay

If Apple Pay doesn’t have permission to use Face ID or Touch ID, you won’t be able to authorize cards and passes to pay. To fix this, open the Settings app and tap on Face ID & Passcode. Then enter your device password and turn on the switch next to Wallet and Apple Pay.

10. Activate Apple Pay in Safari

If you don’t see Apple Pay as a payment method when you make an online transaction in Safari, you must allow websites to check if Apple Pay is active on your device. To do this, open the Settings app and tap Safari. Then scroll down to the “Privacy & Security” section and turn on the switch next to “Verify Apple Pay”.

If you keep encountering the same issue when shopping online on Mac, go to Safari > Preferences > Privacy from the macOS menu bar and make sure the box next to “Allow websites to check for Apple Pay and Apple Card” is active.

11. Re-add Credit/Debit Card

If you’re still having trouble using a particular credit or debit card with Apple Pay, removing and re-adding it to your iPhone might help. So start by opening the Wallet app, select the card you want to remove, tap the “More” icon (three dots) and select “Remove card”.

Then click the Add Card/New Card (+) button in the upper right corner of the screen and scan the card or manually enter card information. You then need to follow the on-screen instructions to re-authorize the card for use with Apple Pay.

12. Update the iPhoneâ€™s System Software

Then try updating the system software on your iPhone. This often helps resolve system-related issues, especially if you’ve recently upgraded to a major version such as iOS 15, which is interfering with Apple Pay.

13. Reset Network Settings

To fix connection issues that are preventing Apple Pay from working properly, try resetting the network settings on your iPhone.

1. Open the Settings app and tap General > Transfer or reset iPhone.

2. Tap Reset > Reset Network Settings.

3. Enter your iPhone’s passcode and click Reset Network Settings to confirm.

Note. Resetting network settings deletes all saved Wi-Fi networks, so open the Settings app and tap Wi-Fi to reconnect to Wi-Fi.

14. Sign Out and Back Into Apple ID

If you’re still having issues with Apple Pay on iPhone, logging out and back in with your Apple ID might help.

1. Open the Settings app and tap your Apple ID.

2. Scroll down and click Sign Out.

3. Turn off Find My iPhone and turn on the toggles next to the iCloud data forms you want to store locally on your iOS device.

4. Select Logout to confirm.

5. Restart your iPhone.

6. Open the Settings app again, and then tap Sign In to sign in again with your Apple ID.
