Our Internet is increasingly at risk of censorship and regulation. Now more than ever, it is important to get involved and understand what you can do to contribute to online activity and digital campaigns.

The fight for net neutrality was only one of the important issues in this area, but there were many more. If that’s the only thing you can think of, then perhaps you should be more informed!

The good news is that online organizations and activism have become more and more popular over the years, with non-profit organizations and publications dedicated to highlighting and solving pressing problems for those passionate about keeping the Internet free and open.

In this article, let’s discuss the four most important newsletters worth subscribing to if you want to stay up to date with the latest news on web activity and online freedom.

Electronic Frontier Foundation

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) describes itself as “a leading non-profit organization that advocates for digital privacy, free speech and innovation.”

In addition to protecting the free Internet, the EFF provides legal remedies and protects people and businesses from illegal legal threats that it believes infringe on personal and civil liberties on the Internet.

The EFF has been involved in cases such as Bernstein v. United States, where he helped Daniel J. Bernstein, a computer programmer and professor, sue the US government for permission to publish Shuffle, an encryption software he developed.

Subscribing to the EFF newsletter gives you access to updates on related news, activities and events. If a zip code is specified, priority will be given to events close to your region.

Internet Freedom Foundation

The first thing to note about the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) is that it focuses on Internet freedom in India. India is second only to China in terms of the number of Internet users with a population of over 700 million, nearly three times as many as the United States.

IFF is known for its Save the Internet, Keep Us Online and Keep Our Privacy campaigns. He is firmly committed to protecting net neutrality, free speech, privacy, and encryption on the Internet.

As a digital freedom organization, its website states the following:

“IFF complements and even hopes to fill the gaps in digital rights organizations, larger civil liberties groups, and online collectives and movements. We take deliberate risk, take a firm stand and follow the path of protecting results. ”

Subscribing to the IFF newsletter will keep you updated with news, related articles and even vacancies related to its mission.

Free Software Foundation

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is committed to providing everyone with the freedom to study, distribute, create and modify computer software. Since about 1985, he has developed the GNU operating system and created the GNU General Public License.

The FSF website offers a wealth of information about campaigns, licensing, and the resources they provide. Some of their ongoing efforts include Free JavaScript, PlayOgg, and OpenDocument campaigns.

The FSF Monthly Newsletter, a free software advocate newsletter, highlights stories and warnings that are relevant to the free software community. It is published in five languages: English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and French.

Along with the official newsletter, the FSF also maintains several mailing lists such as GNU announcements, fundraising announcements and messages from the FSF community team

WIRED

Unlike the other mailing lists described above, WIRED does not represent any non-profit organization or specific Internet activity. However, since 1993, WIRED has maintained a reputation as a leader in reporting on issues related to the freedom and openness of the Internet.

WIRED has published dozens of articles on net neutrality, transparency, free speech, and other important issues that remain the focus of internet activity.

Subscribing to the WIRED newsletter will bring the most important news of the publication to your inbox. You can also subscribe to the WIRED Longreads newsletter, which will highlight WIRED‘s best features and research every Sunday.

An important part of internet activity is keeping up with the latest news on the web, and WIRED is definitely one of the best sources for this.

With these four newsletters, anyone interested in a free and open Internet should have everything they need to keep their inbox with news, investigations, resources, events and job postings on a regular basis. From there it remains to act!
