Google doesn’t make adding text fields to Google Docs as obvious as it does other word processing programs. Fortunately, there are some simple methods that you can use to insert a text box into Google Docs. Text boxes let you add text or images to them, and then move those boxes across, between, or within documents.
How to Insert a Text Box in Google Docs
There are at least two ways to add a text box to Google Docs. The main methods are using a drawing tool and using a single cell table, but each method offers a different layout and formatting options.
Insert a text box into Google Docs using the drawing tool
The drawing tool isn’t the easiest way to insert a text box into a document, but it’s still easy to use and lets you manipulate text boxes throughout the file.
With a drawing tool, you can upload a drawing as an image to Google Drive and add it to your document. You can also add various shapes, line styles, leaders, and arrows. It opens a dialog box in the document where you can create, edit, and format shapes and text boxes using the drawing tool commands.
To insert a text box using a drawing tool:
- Open a document and click Insert> Picture, and then click New to create the text box.
- Click the text box icon.
- Create a text box by clicking and dragging in the drawing area, and then release the mouse button to display the text box. Add text and customize the text box to your liking, and when you’re done, click the blue Save & Close button in the upper-right corner of the drawing area.

You can also customize the shape by clicking the formatting command you want, such as color, adding an image, adding lines, and more.
For shapes that overlap, you can move them to Bring Forward or Send Backward and get the order you want. To reposition text boxes or shapes, right-click the text box or shape in the Draw dialog box, hover over Order, and click to select an ordering option.
How to insert a text box in Google Docs using a single cell table
You can insert and edit a text box in Google Docs using one cell, one column, and a one-row spreadsheet. To do this, click Insert> Table, and then click one cell with one row and one column (1 × 1).
A single cell appears in the document. You can adjust the length and width of the text box to your desired size and then enter text into the cell.
You can customize the color, style, and size of the font to your liking if you want to highlight text or make your document look more professional.
