How to Split a Clip in Adobe Premiere Pro.adobe premiere pro split clip 2021.

One of the things you will often do while editing videos is splitting and trimming clips. It removes parts of the video that you might not need, or helps you optimize the tempo of your video. If you’re just getting started with video editing in Adobe Premiere, you might be overwhelmed by all the tools available and wondering how to split your clips easily.

There are several ways to split a clip in Premiere Pro.

How to Split a Clip in Adobe Premiere Pro

Method 1: Using the Razor Tool

The easiest way to cut or split clips in Premiere is to use the Razor tool. This allows you to split clips at any point in the clip you want, right on the project timeline. The only downside to this method is that it can be less accurate, but it is a good way to do the first rough cut of your clips.

  1. Make sure the clip you want to split is in your timeline.
  1. Look at the left side of the timeline and you will see several tool icons. Hover over them until you find the Razor tool with a razor-like icon and select it.

  1. When you hover over a clip in the timeline, the mouse pointer should look like a Razor icon. Find the location where you want to split the clip.
  1. Click where you want to split and you will see the two parts will now be separated.

  1. Each split section will now act as separate clips.

You can now remove unwanted portions of a clip, or add effects and transitions to any portion of a clip without affecting another portion. Splitting a clip in the timeline will also not affect the original clip in the Project panel, so if you want the clip to be complete again, you can simply find it there and place it back on the timeline.

Method 2: Using the Source Panel

Another way to split a clip in Adobe Premiere is to do it before you place it in the timeline. This method is a little more accurate, as you can change the exact In and Out points of the desired portion of the clip. When using this method, instead of navigating to the timeline, you will be using the Source panel. This is usually the panel in the upper left corner, and when you select a clip in the media library, a preview of it is displayed here.

So, select the clip in the Project panel that you want to split so that it appears in the Source panel. Then follow these steps.

  1. At the beginning of the clip’s timeline in the Source panel, you’ll see an arrow marker. You can use this to scroll through the clip and set entry and exit markers. Wherever the In marker is placed, the clip will begin when placed on the timeline, and vice versa for the Out marker.

  1. Press the I or O keys where you want to place the In and Out markers. I’m for the entrance, O for the exit. The toolbar in the Source panel also has icons that can be set by clicking on them, they look like parentheses.
  1. After setting the markers in the Source panel tools, select Paste. This will place the clip on your timeline where the timeline marker is. You can insert video with or without audio.

This is a good method to be precise, as you can view the clip frame by frame and place in and out markers at those specific points. It also won’t affect the original clip from the Project panel, just like the other method. And you don’t have to deal with leftover clipped clips cluttering up your timeline.

How to Delete Part of a Clip

If you’ve used the Razor method, you’ll probably want to clean up parts of the clip that you don’t need in your project. To do this, you just need to delete part of the clip. Don’t worry if you later realize that you want to return part of the clip, you can simply go to your library and find the original clip again to insert it into the timeline.

Here are some easy ways to remove parts of a clip:

  1. Right-click the part of the clip you don’t want. From here select the Cut option. Part of the clip is removed from the timeline.

Using these techniques, it is very easy to achieve the perfect clip crop. Over time, these techniques will become second nature as they are some of the most commonly used tools during a video project.
