Many factors can prevent your AirPods from charging when you place them in the charging case or connect the charging case to a power source. This guide provides seven troubleshooting steps to try if your AirPods won’t charge when connected to a power source via a Lightning cable or wireless charging mat.

These guidelines apply to all AirPods generations and models.

AirPods Not Charging how to fix

1. Keep the Charging Case Plugged to Power

When you open the charging case, your iPhone or iPad should display the charging or battery status of the AirPods, even if it’s connected to a power source. If your AirPods and charging case batteries are completely discharged, you may need to charge them for a long time before they turn on again.

Apple recommends charging your AirPods and case for at least 15 minutes (5 minutes for AirPods Max) using the Lightning cable that came with your device.

2. Check the Charging Connection

You’ve plugged your AirPods into an outlet for a few minutes, but they won’t charge. What are you doing? First of all, make sure the wall outlet or power outlet is turned on and working properly. If you charge your AirPods from a computer USB port, charge them directly from a wall outlet.

Likewise, make sure the Lightning cable is securely connected to the power adapter. Unplug the cable and plug it back into the charging case. Alternatively, remove and reinsert both AirPods into the case.

You should also check your power adapter to make sure it is working properly. Charging another device with the power adapter and cable is a good troubleshooting test to make sure your charging accessories are in good condition.

3. Examine Your Charging Accessories

Fake or substandard charging accessories may not charge your AirPods, or worse, damage your headphones. Use the charging accessories that came with your AirPods, or purchase Apple-certified accessories from authorized retailers. Read our article on the dangers of using third-party accessories to charge Apple devices.

This article shares some of the best Lightning cables for Apple devices. Replace the power adapter or lightning cable if you notice any cuts or damage on the outside. Better yet, try charging your AirPods with a Qi-compatible charging pad if your AirPods support wireless charging.

AirPods won’t charge wirelessly if the charging mat doesn’t support the Qi wireless charging standard. Check the specifications of your wireless charger and make sure it is Qi compatible.

4. Clean the AirPods Metal Cap

The shiny metal caps at the base / back of both AirPods are charging contact points. Dirt on the surface of the metal cover can interfere with charging your AirPods. Remove both AirPods from the charging case and wipe the shiny metal cover with a lint-free cloth. If your AirPods still won’t charge when you put them back in the case, clean the case and try again.

5. Clean the Charging Case

Your AirPods will not charge if foreign objects have accumulated in the charging port of the case and in the wells where the AirPods are located. Dirt, grime, lint, and dust can block the transfer of power from the wall outlet to the charger and from the charging case to the AirPods.

Use a periodontal brush to clean the AirPods in the charging case. Be sure to remove any foreign objects adhering to the metal contacts in the charging case. Apple recommends cleaning AirPods with a cloth lightly dampened with fresh water. Then dry with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

Use an anti-static brush or soft bristled toothbrush to clean the charging port. Clean the ports carefully to avoid damaging the metal contacts in the ports. Whatever you do, be sure not to spill liquid into the case or into the charging port. If you don’t have a cleaning brush, a can / compressed air can be the best alternative for removing loose dirt from the case and charging port.

If your AirPods still won’t charge when plugged into a working outlet with Genuine Apple Accessories, your AirPods charging case is likely damaged. Try charging different AirPods in the charging case to determine the source of the problem.

If the case charges other AirPods without issue, clean the metal caps on the back of your AirPods and reinsert them into the case. This time, use a silk wipe and a mixture of water and isopropyl rubbing alcohol to wipe down the metal contacts. Read this Apple Support article to find out what you can and don’t clean AirPods.

6. Reset the AirPods

Restoring AirPods to their factory defaults can fix charging, audio output, and other firmware issues. Before factory reset, you need to uninstall AirPods from your device.

Insert both AirPods into the charging case and close the lid. Wait about 30 seconds and open the charging case again. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad, select Bluetooth, and tap the Information (i) icon next to AirPods.

Note. Skip to step # 4 if your AirPods are not listed as paired devices.

Click Forget This Device and select Forget This Device at the confirmation prompt.

Press and hold the setting button on the back of the charging case for 15 seconds until the status light flashes white or amber. Bring your AirPods close to your device and follow the on-screen prompts to reconnect AirPods.

Connect your AirPods to a power source using genuine Apple accessories and check if it charges.

7. Update Your AirPods

Apple frequently releases firmware updates for all generations of AirPods to introduce new features, fix bugs, and improve wireless performance. If your AirPods’ battery is draining quickly, charging slowly, or not charging at all, updating the firmware might fix the problem.

Refer to our AirPods firmware update guide for how to force update your AirPods.

8. Visit a Service and Repair Center

If none of the above recommendations solve the problem with your AirPods not charging, contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider or the Genius Bar near you to diagnose your AirPods. Get free repairs if you have an Apple Care + plan or if your AirPods are still covered by Apple’s one-year limited warranty. Apple will most likely provide you with new AirPods if the charging malfunction is caused by a factory defect.

Otherwise, you will have to pay a service fee to repair your AirPods or charging case. You may need to provide the AirPods packaging and proof of purchase, showing the AirPods price, date of purchase, and (re) seller contact information.
