If the @ and “keys are swapped in Windows 10, you’re probably wondering what happened and how to fix it.
This can be a frustrating issue, especially if it seems to switch between keys at random. Sometimes it can be difficult even to know how to return the “and @” keys to the correct keys.
Let’s take a look at why this is happening in the first place, and then we’ll come up with a few solutions to get your keyboard to work with the keys you want again. In most cases, the solution is simple.
Why does the @ & ”switch keep switching?
The reason the @ and ”keys keep swapping places is because your keyboard switches between two different language settings. Typically, the keyboard switches between the US keyboard and the UK keyboard. The main difference between these keyboards is that the “and @” symbols are in opposite positions.
On a British keyboard, pressing shift + ’will give you the @ symbol, and pressing shift + 2 will give you an apostrophe. On the American keyboard, the opposite is true. So, even though your physical keys might tell you one thing, Windows 10 software assumes that the keyboard or language settings you are using are for a different language. Fortunately, swapping is pretty easy.
First, you need to figure out whether your keyboard is British or American. It’s easy to do. Look at the first three numeric keys on your keyboard and refer to the table above. The @ on key 2 means it is US, and the apostrophe means it is a UK keyboard.

Once you understand which keyboard you have, you can select the appropriate language setting by following the steps listed below.
Change the default language settings
The next step is to change the language settings of Windows 10. To do this, click Start and type Language. Then click on language settings.
Then take a look at your preferred language settings. Click the arrow to make sure the language you want to use is at the top of the list. If you have the @ symbol on your 2 key, then there should be American English at the top. If your 2 key has a “, UK English should be up.
Alternatively, you can select a language that will not be used and click the Remove button. This should stop your computer from switching between the two language options at any time.
If for any reason you want to keep multiple languages, you can always switch between them at any time by clicking the language button in the taskbar to the left of the time.
This is useful when you are typing and the @ and “keys suddenly swap positions while typing. This happens due to the fact that you accidentally pressed the Windows key + spacebar at the same time – this will switch languages.

When the language preferences page opens, make sure you have the correct display language for your keyboard. Refer to the table at the beginning again if you are unsure of which to choose.
Then restart your computer.

The final troubleshooting option is to reset and reinstall keyboard drivers. To do this:
- Click the Start button and type device manager.
- Click on Device Manager when it appears in the search results.
- In Device Manager, open the drop-down arrow for keyboards.
- Double-click the top option and then click the driver tab.
- Click Remove Device.
- Click Remove.
