1 – Ti-84 Plus Graphing Calculator For Dummies

The author(s) were writing for some calculator but it definitely wasn’t the TI-84 Plus CE. Even though they dedicate several pages to talking about how great the TI-84 Plus C is (color, functionality, etc.) you can’t use this book as an aid to understanding this calculator. And it would be so easy to fix.The single largest problem I encountered revolves around the key notation used by the authors. As in other For Dummies books, the author shows key usage specifying the main key identifier rather than the function desired. So for “2nd quit” they write ‘ m because the mode key’s 2nd function is quit. OK, I can deal with using ‘ to specify using the 2nd key but m for mode? There’s also a “math” key. Which one is m? Math or mode? There are many such problems such as figuring out if ‘sL means 2nd sin log or 2nd stat ln or 2nd log sto, Even if the author had published a picture of the keyboard with s = stat key, L=log key, etc it would make it much easier to understand the directions. The author also references keys that may have existed on prior models (TI-84?) that just don’t exist on the TI-84 Plus CE. For example, ; is used to refer to either the up arrow or the down arrow – I’m still not sure which. There is no semicolon on the TI-84 Plus CE that I can find.Short verdict – save your money. This book is a waste of time. It’s easier to find YouTube videos that show how to do most things. .
The kindle version does not show the buttons you need to press. For example, the book says something like “if you want to lower the screen brightness, press `:” It’s not a verbatim quote, but the last part about what to press is correct. The calculator, does not have either of those buttons to push. What its trying to say is press the 2nd key and the arrow down. I’m sure the book itself has photos of the buttons you need to press, but they neglected to bring those icons over to the kindle version. This makes reading the book, and in turn following directions, very difficult. Get the paperback instead. I’m going to try to return mine and get the book version if Amazon lets me. Or else I’m out of some money. .
If you don’t have the 84 Plus C this book is not for you. The book claims to be useful for the entire 84 Plus family but that is not the case. There is very limited description of the differences between how something is done in the 84 Plus and the C model. In many cases there is no explanation of the differences and only the 84 Plus C procedure is described. In some cases the functionality doesn’t exist outside of the 84 Plus C and the author neglects to mention it. The result is that the book becomes very frustrating and can cause you to waste a lot of time chasing solutions you can’t achieve with the 84 Plus. .
To start with, this book’s focus is the TI-84 plus C, not the TI-84 plus. It references many functions, tables, etc. that are just not available on the TI-84 plus. If you want a comprehensive. logically-formatted base of information on the TI-84 plus and have access to the internet, all you have to do is Google ‘TI84 Plus Manual’. This will take you to a website where you can download a 422 page manual that has detailed information on every aspect of this calculator. .

I have problems with certain kinds of functions and operations that this guide didn’t address. For example, trying to graph certain parametric equations doesn’t produce the curve in course examples. I don’t know why and the book doesn’t even go into parametric equations. I also turned to the book thinking I could quickly look up resetting the user values to factory standard. Nothing there. The book is nice for some things but just doesn’t go far enough.Update: I found Using the TI-84 Plus, 2nd Ed by Christopher R. Mitchell to be a much more useful guide and reference for this calculator. .
I Tutor full time; this is a great get started guide for the MOST popular calculator in HS today. (No, I don’t work for TI) I have a DVD of a 40 hr course on this calculator; this boils down the basics. Yes, you will need to learn more about some of the functions in each individual class. Suck it up and do it. This will help you start. .
This is a great instructive booklet on the main features of the TI-84 Plus CE graphing calculator. It is easy to read, and to follow the steps along with the illustrations. It has 7 main chapters covered in its 70 pages, including the basics, graphing, equation solving, differential and integral calculus, matrices, and probability & statistics. A nice starter booklet for anyone getting to know the main features of this calculator. Fun, and well worth the price. .
Not enough information to justify cost. .

I liked this book because it was like a simplified TI-84 manual. There are only the instructions I need for all the settings, functions, and features.Amazon must have known I was searching for a book like this. I looked at all the other books and never bought one because none seemed simple enough. Then when this book just came out, they sent me an e-mail suggesting it! Pretty cool. .
I purchased this book simply to learn, from a young user/author, how to efficaciously use the TI-83/84. .
Excellent tutorial. Even this grandpa could understand it! .
Low cost and great product. Get the manual online for help with this meter. .

I really thought I was lost in college algebra this semester. It has been 30 years since I was school, but am going to community college to finally have (hopefully) a career of my own. This book-I was silly at first and downloaded and printed pages here and there. I had to have the book, because each page was helpful. I am so excited to have it in my library, because I know if I forget something in the future, this book will help! .
One of the best comprehensive user guides on a calculator that I have read. This is a how-to book for the major categories of math that this calculator can handle. You want to do algebra on the TI-84? Buy this book. You want to do statistics on the TI-84? Buy this book. You want to do calculus on the TI-84? Buy this book. You want to do matrices on the TI-84? Buy this book. You want to do expert graphing on the TI-84? Buy this book. You want to do financial calculations on the TI-84? Buy this book. You want to do programming on the TI-84? Buy this book. .
I started with the For Dummies book on the TI-84, available for free at the library. I bought Mitchell’s book because it wasn’t at the library. Since then I have been studying a few pages each day and trying out the examples in the book. I don’t give the book the full five stars only because I’m only halfway through the book, but Amazon sent an email asking for my opinion on the book so here goes. Mitchell is considerate of the reader and slowly gets you up to speed. There are plenty of examples you can try. I am from the olden times of slide rules, so even the TI-30 back in the 1970s was revolutionary. The TI-84 absolutely boggles my mind, but younger persons probably take it for granted. What I would like to see is a similar book exploring the Casio 9750, also an excellent graphing calculator which unfortunately has no For Dummies book and provides only minuscule documentation with the purchase – although a complete manual can be found online. .
I have never owned a graphing calculator. This book has helped me tremendously with my TI-84 Plus CE. I don’t know what I would have done otherwise. Maybe frantically searching the internet for how-to guides? Having this book is much cleaner, much nicer and way easier than doing all that!I recommend this book. .

5 – TI-84 Plus Tutorials: The TI-84 Plus for Beginners: Get Started with the TI-84 Plus Graphing Calculator

I am happily a math nerd, and have been since at least Third Grade (1959), but I didn’t really start to learn how to use graphing calculators for mathematical use until I took Advanced College Algebra this summer. I learned a lot during that course, and it is very likely that some of your math teachers or professors might use this model in the classroom. This book is a very nice introduction to how to use the TI-84 Plus family of calculators, especially the “Black” TI-84 Plus, the TI-84 Plus C “Silver” Edition, and the TI-84 Plus CE. I learned from the history that was contained in the first chapter.I did find one mistake in the second chapter. Using the CE screen capture for his example, he talks about how the ANSWERS mode can be set to one of three options, AUTO, DEC or FRAC-APPROX, but as you can see in his example screen and on your CE, one of the changes that Texas Instruments made when allegedly improving things when moving from the Silver Edition to the CE was getting rid of FRAC-APPROX. In the same paragraph, Mr. Allen states that in AUTO mode, answers will be displayed in fraction mode if you enter a fraction, but my CE does not do this, nor did my CSE when I tried it just now.(Yes, I did complain to TI about the lack of FRAC-APPROX as a default answer mode in the CE. Their reply is that we don’t need it as a default because we can press FRAC in the math menu to convert any answer to a fraction.)If your son or daughter is using the TI-84 at school for math class, you might want to get this book in order to teach yourself more about the calculator, and be able to take to your kids about the topic.Another calculator to check out is the HP Prime. I also have it. .
I’m pretty certain that you could’ve learned to pilot an Apollo space mission in less time than it would take to figure out all the submenus on these new generation of calculators. Luckily, books like this exist to aid those of us old codgers with a high need to learn and a low tolerance for fumbling about with trial and error. There are a few differences I’ve noticed as there has been another OS update since this book was written however, the differences aren’t anything that will put you in any sort of jeopardy so far as daily use of the calc is concerned. Well-written and concise. .
I just got my new TI-84 Plus Saturday. I checked the O/S and it is 2.55 MP so I’ve got the latest. Today I purchased this eBook and am having problems early on. He says that when I depress ALPHA+F2 I should have options 6,7,8,9. Well, they’re not there. Now, to be fair, he’s using the TI-84 PLUS CE (Color Edition). He should at least say I won’t have those options but no mention yet. They are all calculus related, I believe.Let the buyer beware. .
As a High School math teacher I am always on the lookout for resources to help my students. With his new Kindle book TI-84 Plus Tutorials Lucas Allen has provided a great service to teachers and students at a fantastic value. With wonderfully clear screen shots he clearly demonstrates both how to have your TI 84+ tuned to perfection and to use the many tremendous capabilities available on this great calculator. I will be sure to let my students know about this GREAT resource. This book is a must for any math and science teacher’s library.Cheers and happy calculating! .

These quick study guides are a great way to answer quick questions someone may have. These calculators are advanced and it can be difficult to keep track of all of their functions so these come in handy. Would recommend this product! .

7 – TI-83/84 Plus Graphing Calculators for Dummies, Portable Edition
Top Reviews
This is pretty much exactly what you would expect from a “For Dummies” guide. These calculators are difficult to understand and come with little instruction, this is a must have for anyone new to this format of calculator. The reason for the 4 stars is because this is not something I was necessarily excited about, just something that I needed to ensure that I am able to use my ti84 plus to it’s full potential. .
This book is very helpful to a new user of the calculator. I have not finished going through the whole book but I Like what I have read. There are no problems for a person to solve but there are plenty of screen shots to duplicate and help step through the process. .
What can I say other than it is a book and relates the information needed in an adequate and readable fashion. Context is as expected with some shortcuts; however, it reads like a manual and requires task and purpose to master. .
Perfect for adolescent studying math. .

10 – Using the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus: Full Coverage of the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition

Christopher is an authority on calculators from Texas Instruments. He writes for the beginners and for the advanced users. I’ve gotten a lot of interesting and useful knowledge about these wonderful equipment. And also I took ideas for using the other great family of Texas Instruments, 89s, 92 Plus and Voyage 200.I really appreciate this purchase because the content is very useful to me and because I got two books for the same price, the printed one and the electronic one. Yes, if you buy the printed book, you get a code to download the ebook from the publisher, for use it permanently. .
This guide on how to use the Ti-84 plus, is a much improved and much clearer version of the user manual. It covers every mathematical topic from algebra to advanced calculus and goes through just about every aspect of the calculator from graphing to solving advanced mathematical equations, there is even a little bit on how to program the calculator, but there is an other book for that. It also completely covers the ti 84 plus c silver edition in full, which I have. I was a little bit hesitant to buy a book with no reviews, but I am very glad that I had made my purchase. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with any model of the Ti-84 plus or Ti-83 plus. It is an excellent guide book. If you have any questions leave them in the comments. .
A very comprehensive guide. Well written with a lot of good information beyond the math related topics. I wish I had read this before buying the TI-83. I would have gone for TI-84 had I known the advantages. .
This book has help me to grasp how to use this calculator. I have never used the graphing calculator so this book assumes the same. It has very clear examples to get you started in learning the use of the calculator. The book assumes that you have a good knowledge of mathematics. .
