1 – Texas Instruments TI-89 Advanced Graphing Calculator
Top Reviews Very different operation compared to the TI-82/83/84. The TI-89 is a bit slower to navigate and use in a lot of ways, more menus, feature overload(take years for a casual user to really get familiar), the user guide covers the basics but could be more helpful. It has its uses, but here in 2018 I would say general computers are more useful for heavy computations that need some type of actual programming, any phone has a basic sci calc app, the TI-83/84 user interface is better in academics, for both speed of basic feature access and simple familiarity. (help from a larger user base and some tests provide calculators so notes and answers are not stored, and they will not be providing ti-89s) I have not used the HP equivalent, it had good reputation but I suspect maybe it has similar shortcomings in the modern world. . I bought this for a college class 9 years ago and the calculator has held up. I bought the used version so I am unsure how old it truly is. It is a calculator and does the graphing like I needed but these are a dime a dozen at the thrift store so in hindsight I would have just boughten this from there instead if I could do it over again. However the brand and model are solid so if you need a graphing calculator I would definitely recommend Texas Instruments, they are well known and make solid products. . It was said of my grandparents that they knew how to turn a penny into a nickel, i.e. they could find values and bargains.I bought this original model TI-89 from a private seller here on Amazon for $45.49 including shipping, and while it really does have a few years on it, it barely looks a year old and is functionally like new. I could have gone to my nearest big box store and purchased a TI-89 Titanium for $155.13, including my local sales tax, and I would have wound up with very little additional functionality and a more gawdy and distracting outward appearance, and I don’t think I’d like the curved keyboard. I could use my new/used TI-89 to divide 45.49 into 155.13 and see that I paid only 29.3% of what what I could have.Other reviews suggest that the ’89 can’t do logarithms of negative numbers. That is because by default, the ’89 limits itself to real number inputs and solutions. For that reason, the square root of -2 gives you the same error message. Do Mode -> Complex Format and change the setting from Real to Rectangular, and you’ll be fine.My only caveat is that this is not a good calculator to use if your vision isn’t good. . This calculator saved my life in calculus, was a cheap price, and is so useful! Only problem is that it doesn’t integrate sec, csc, and cot, but that’s the downside of this older model. Was definitely worth the money though and am glad I got it for only $60 at the time I needed it the most! Read more
2 – Texas Instruments TI-73 Graphing Calculator
Top Reviews This is a great little calculator for middle school, but it does not have graphing capabilities for high school or college level statistics, so it has a very short shelf life. While the TI-84 is more expensive, it will be the only graphing calculator you’ll need. . At its current used (good – very good condition) prices of ~$20, I would very strongly recommend this calculator over similarly priced scientific calculators due to its added functionalities (graphing, programming, etc.). This is the perfect calculator for middle school math classes and basic high school algebra classes and is far cheaper than other graphing calculators like the TI-84 Plus. . The calculator works. I was a bit disappointed with the maintenance of the calculator. When I first opened the package it came in, it wouldn’t turn on. It had very old batteries that were leaking and rusting on the inside. Once I tried it with new batteries and cleaned the rust, all was good. It was still worth the price! . This bad boy is the greatest. Without having to shell out a hundred bucks, I have a great multi-line calculator. I often need to go back a step or two in a calculation, and it’s nice having the lines above to reference Read more
3 – EZ Graphing Purple Hard Slide Cover (See Description for Details) for TI 84 Plus, TI 84 Plus C Silver Edition, TI 89 Titanium (not for TI 84 Plus CE)
Top Reviews I absolutely love my new EZ Graphing slide case cover. The cover fits on my calculator perfectly and has a lot of cool features. The x/y coordinate on the center of the cover is especially awesome as it helps me both speed up and achieve a better layout for my graphing problems. The centimeter ruler on the side is also great for drawing a variety of geometric shapes. I love that I don’t have to remember to bring an extra ruler in my backpack anymore. This cover rocks! Also, I love the look and color of the cover. I use my calculator every day and it is so much more cheerful to see and use my calculator with it’s cute pink cover. Overall, very glad that I bought it. . First off, I use the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition. My initial impressions of this cover is that its a neat and possibly useful accessory for my calculator. Its numerous equations for the different types of graphs is certainly useful if you need a quick reference. The cut out at the top for a quick and easy graph making looks pretty useful as well and the two types of rulers will certainly come in handy. My gripe about the cover is that it is very much a standalone cover when you are actually using the calculator, because the rulers will get in the way off holding the calculator. In addition, the rulers itself adds bulk to calculator itself making it somewhat harder to grasp or hold. However, I do recognize that it is really the only place to put a ruler on the body. The material used for the cover is not like the glossy slippery original ones either. It’s more matte and rough. A huge thing about the back cover is that it does not include rubber feet and any grippy materials leaving the calculator to slide around. If one was the use the calculator without the cover attached, then it would be fine but I do. A minor thing is that I don’t really like how apparent the logo sticks out on the back. The TI logo is pretty small unlike EZ graphing.Overall, I’m not sure if it will beat my trusty ruler but I’m willing to use it in its place. It is definitely a solid product and if you are in need of an all in one package, then this would not be a bad purchase. . Fits great, son likes this over the stock cover. The green sets his calculator apart so it does not get mixed up in a crowd. . I’ve used this for years! Really great tool, making graphs, having a quick reference to slopes and curves helped a lot in calculus. Read more
