You have just enjoyed surfing the Internet when suddenly a small error message appears: “No Internet, Safe.” This is a strange and cryptic message, but it is very clear that your internet connection has stopped working.
Web pages won’t open and you can’t download anything! What’s happening? It’s actually much easier than you think.
What Does “No Internet, Secured” Even Mean?
If you don’t know much about how your internet connection works, this message can be confusing. However, when you think about it, it really makes sense.
You see, your computer is not directly connected to the Internet. Instead, you have a device such as a network router that broadcasts information to a wide area network (WAN) outside of your home. However, your computer is also connected to the network with all the other devices that the router serves in your home. This is called a local area network (LAN) and this network will continue to work even if something goes wrong with your internet connection.
So the status message “No Internet, secure” simply means that your WiFi connection to the router is OK and properly encrypted (“Protected”), but there is no Internet connection from your home router to the outside world (“No Internet” ). … To solve this problem, we need to determine why exactly the Internet connection is not working.
1. It Could Be an Outage
The most common reason you might see this error is because your internet connection from your ISP is down. This is not your fault, which means that everything is in order on your part. The easiest way to test this is to see if you have an Internet connection through another device on the same router.
If you can access the Internet through some other device, such as a smartphone, but not on your Windows 10 PC, then the problem must be with your computer and not your Internet connection.
2. Reset Your ISP Connection
If you are using fiber or DSL, you can sometimes request a reset from your ISP. How to do this depends on your ISP. You can have an app, support email, or phone number. Whichever channel you are requesting is a good first step if your internet connection is really down.
3. Are You Connected to the Right Network?
This might be a silly detail, but before you start looking for a solution, make sure you are connected to the correct Wi-Fi network. You may have accidentally connected to a Wi-Fi network that does not have an Internet connection. You might have a GoPro camera or mobile hotspot that you left behind that doesn’t have a SIM card.
4. Reset Your Router (and Your Computer)
Before touching your Windows 10 computer, first, unplug the router, leave it off for a few minutes, and then plug it back in. In our experience, this simple trick resolves most “No Internet, security” errors.
While you are doing this, restart your computer. It won’t hurt, and it can also fix the problem without additional effort.
5. Switch From WiFi to Ethernet
Since this error is WiFi related, it could be a problem with your real WiFi hardware or software. Try connecting your Windows 10 computer to your router via Ethernet instead. If your internet connection starts working, it means that the problem is either with the Wi-Fi hardware, network drivers, or with the Wi-Fi setup on your computer or in the router itself.
6. Run the Network Troubleshooter
If you’re experiencing a misconfiguration issue on your Windows 10 PC itself, one quick way to sort it out is to use the Windows Network Troubleshooter. Here’s the quickest way to do it:
- Open the Start menu.
- Enter “Find and fix network problems” in the search bar.
- Once it appears, select it.
- Click Next to start the troubleshooter.
As soon as the troubleshooter exits, it will report this. If possible, he will inform you that problems have been found and fixed. Hopefully this will fix your internet connection issue. Or he may tell you what is wrong, but he cannot fix it. In this case, you should use this information for further troubleshooting work.
7. Release and Renew IP and Flush Your DNS
This error often occurs due to IP address issues, and a quick fix is to force the computer to release the IP address assigned to it by the router. Finally, to clear the DNS cache, do the following:
- Right-click the Start button and select Windows Powershell (Admin).
- Type ipconfig / flushdns and press Enter.
Your computer’s DNS cache will be cleared. Hopefully all IP related issues will be fixed as well.
8. Roll Back the Last Windows Update
We have seen several cases where this particular issue could have been caused by a not working Windows update. It is impossible to tell if this is just a case of intermittent update related issues. However, there is nothing wrong with rolling back the latest Windows update to see if it makes any difference and fix the error.
To undo the last Windows update, follow these steps:
- Open the Start menu and select the gear icon to open Windows Settings.
- Then select Update & Security. …
- Select the “Recovery” tab.
- Find “Revert to a previous version of Windows 10.
- Select Get Started.
- Now follow the steps in the wizard to complete the rollback process.
If your last Windows update was somehow buggy, everything should work again. Just keep in mind that Windows does not store recovery data indefinitely. Therefore, if a long time has passed since the last update, you may not be able to roll back it. That being said, if the update was not recent, it probably isn’t related to your problem anyway.
9. Rolling Back Network Drivers
