On laptops and Mac desktops, screenshots are saved as PNG image files. This tutorial will walk you through various ways to convert these screenshots to PDF and JPG formats. You will also learn how to change the default file formats for saving screenshots on Mac.

How to Take Screenshot on Mac
Mac computers have several keyboard shortcuts for taking different types of screenshots. The Touch Bar (for MacBook Pro) also has a dedicated Screenshot tool for the same purpose.
Method 1. Using keyboard shortcuts
Pressing Shift + Command + 3 at the same time will take a screenshot of the entire screen.
To capture a portion of the screen, press Shift + Command + 4 and use the crosshair tool to select the area you want to capture. To move the selection, press the Spacebar (without lifting your finger from the trackpad) and drag the selection to the area you want.
If your MacBook has a Touch Bar, press Shift + Command + 6 to take a screenshot of the Touch Bar.

Method 2: From the Touch Bar
You can also take a screenshot of your MacBook using the Touch Bar. Expand the control bar and tap the screenshot icon.
In the Captured Selected Portion section, select the area you want to capture and select Capture from the screenshot menu.
To take a screenshot of your entire Mac screen using the Touch Bar, select the Capture Full Screen icon in the far left corner and choose Capture.
It is also possible to take a snapshot of the application window. Select the Take Snapshot of Selected Window icon, hover over the camera icon on the application you want to capture a screenshot of, and select anywhere in the application window.
Editing Screenshots on Mac
Whichever method you choose, your Mac will display a thumbnail of the screenshot in the lower right corner of your screen.
Clicking on a thumbnail opens a preview window where you can resize and crop the screenshot, add text and shapes, insert signatures, or share the screenshot via AirDrop, Messages, Mail, etc.
This built-in editor also allows you to convert screenshots to other file formats.
Converting Screenshot on Mac
We’ll assume that you already know that there are different image formats. macOS saves screenshots in Portable Network Graphic (PNG) format by default. Images saved in this format are of higher quality and larger file size compared to other common formats such as JPG, BMP, etc.
Converting screenshots to JPEG can save space on your Mac. You may also need to convert screenshots to Portable Document Format (PDF) to meet file upload requirements on certain platforms or websites.
Fortunately, macOS’s built-in editor allows you to convert your default PNG screenshots to JPEG (or JPG), TIFF, HEIC, PDF, and more.
1. Convert Screenshot to PDF on Mac
Capture an area of the screen using keyboard shortcuts or the Touch Bar and follow these steps to convert the screenshot to PDF.
- Double-click or double-tap the screenshot to open it with a preview – built-in macOS image and PDF editor.
Alternatively, Control-click the screenshot, choose Open With, and choose Preview.
- Select File from the menu bar and choose Export to PDF.
2. Convert Screenshot to JPG on Mac
Rephrasing screenshots in JPG on Mac is the same. Only the JPG conversion tool on macOS is a little more advanced – you can choose the image quality for the resulting JPG file.
3. Convert Screenshot to PDF or JPG Using Online File Converters
There are several online file conversion tools that you can use to convert Mac screenshots to JPG images and PDF documents. Online-Convert and ZamZam are good examples of reputable online tools that allow you to convert files between different types.
Visit these platforms in your web browser, download the screenshot, select the image or document format you want the screenshot to convert to, and download the resulting file to your Mac.
4. Change Default File Format For Screenshots on Mac
As mentioned earlier, macOS saves screenshots in PNG file formats by default. Frequent converting of screenshots (PNG) to other file formats can be stressful. Always setting up your Mac to save screenshots in a commonly used file format will save you a lot of time, energy, and storage space.
We especially recommend changing the default format for screenshots to JPG if your Mac is running out of memory. This is because PNG files often take up more storage space than JPG and PDF documents.
The image below shows the file sizes of three screenshots (in different formats) that we took simultaneously on our test MacBook.
PNG screenshot took up the most space (3.1 MB), followed by PDF (2.7 MB) and JPG (680 KB) screenshots.
This command tells your Mac to save screenshot files in JPG format.
In the future, your Mac will save screenshots in PDF format. macOS also allows you to save screenshots to other multimedia formats such as TIFF and GIF. All you have to do is paste in the defaults, write com.apple.screencapture type TIFF, or write com.apple.screencapture type GIF in the terminal window by default and press Enter.
These commands will change the default file format for your Mac screenshots to TIFF or GIF, respectively.
To change the default screenshot file format to PNG, paste in the defaults, write com.apple.screencapture type PNG in the Terminal window and press Enter.
To verify that the format of your Mac’s screenshot has changed, take a screenshot and check the file details.
Right-click the screenshot or Control-click Get Info from the context menu and check the Type line under General.
If the aspect ratio of the screenshot has not changed, rerun the appropriate command, take another screenshot, and check the aspect ratio again. If you are still unable to change the file format of the screenshot, restart your Mac and try again.
