If you’ve recently played with Windows 10 and tried to install it on a laptop with Intel HD graphics, you might have been surprised when you tried to boot and ended up with a black screen! At least it was! I have a Dell laptop and the Windows 10 installation went smoothly.
After rebooting, I saw a lovely black screen and nothing else. After playing around a bit, I decided to try a few things and it ended up working, but it took a while! In this post, I will explain how to fix black screen in Windows 10.
Safe Mode
The first thing you can try is Safe Mode in Windows 10. Obviously it was a video card issue and booting into Safe Mode with minimal graphics drivers. You can read my previous post on how to boot Windows in Safe Mode.
If you can enter Safe Mode, you can try downloading a few other drivers and see if that fixes the problem. First, however, you should use a program like Display Driver Uninstaller to remove all graphics drivers from your system.
If you have a machine like Dell or HP, try going to their website and downloading the latest driver for Intel HD Graphics they provide. If you already have the latest driver installed from the manufacturer’s website and the issue persists, you can try downloading the latest drivers from Intel itself.

Connect to an external monitor
If you cannot enter Safe Mode, you can also try connecting your laptop to an external display via HDMI, VGA, DVI, etc. I have checked this and it works fine. Windows 10 booted without issue. The laptop screen remained black, but at least I was able to log in and adjust the settings.
You can also try disabling Intel HD Graphics and then trying to boot Windows 10. This fixed the problem for some people. You can do this by clicking “Start” and typing in Device Manager.
Now expand Display Adapters, then right click on Intel HD Graphics and select Disable.
If you are having this problem and have come up with another way to solve it or find a set of drivers that work on your computer, please leave a comment and let everyone know. Enjoy!
