Recently, in my office, a user received the following errors when trying to open a Word document:
Word cannot start the mswrd632.wpc converter.
or
Word cannot start SSPDFCG_x64.cnv converter
Whenever the user pressed the OK button, it just pops up. What was really weird was that if she pressed the red X button, the document would open fine! Strange!
The user was running Office 2013 and was getting this error. After doing a little research, we found several possible solutions. In this post, I will list them here.
Method one – Nuance
If you have any Nuance software installed then that is definitely the reason why you are getting this error message. There are two ways to solve this problem. First, you can rename the SSPDFCG_x64.cnv file, which should fix the problem.
This error usually occurs if you have 32-bit Word and 64-bit Nuance software installed. Change to the following directory on your system:
– / C: Program Files Common Files Microsoft Shared TextConv
Rename the SSPDFCG_x64.cnv file to SSPDFCG_x64.old. Restart your computer and see if the problem persists.
Method 2 – Unregister Text Converter
Typically, on Windows XP SP2 and above and Windows Server 2003 SP1 and above, if you have a plain text file or other file type that is not a Microsoft Word file but has a .doc extension, you will receive this error.
This can also happen if you are opening a really old document created in Word for Windows 6.0 or Word 97. In this case, you can turn off the mswrd632 converter to avoid getting this error. The files will then be opened by Microsoft Office text converters.
You can unregister this converter by going to Start, then launch and typing regedit. Then navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Shared Tools Text Converters Import MSWord6.wpc
Right-click the MSWord6.wpc section in the left pane and select Delete. If you receive an error with SSPDFCG_x64.cnv, then remove this item first. If you have a Word 97 document, you can still open it in Word 2003 or 2007. However, you can no longer open these files in WordPad. You will receive an error message:
Unable to load Word files for Windows 6.0
If you really need to use WordPad to open Word 6.0 / 95 files, you can re-enable the Word 6.0 / 95 Converter for Windows and Macintosh to RFT. Open the registry and navigate to the following sections:
For 32-bit Windows
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Applets Wordpad
For Microsoft Windows in Windows 64 (WOW) mode
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Software Wow6432Node Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Applets Wordpad
If the Wordpad key is not in the left pane, create one. After that, create a new DWORD value in the right pane named AllowConversion and set it to 1.
Method 3 – Delete the Text Converters key
If that doesn’t work, try editing your registry. Make sure you back up your registry before making any changes. Now open the Registry Editor by clicking the Start button and typing regedit.
Navigate to the next key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Shared Tools Text Converters
Go ahead, right click on Text Converter and delete the whole key.
Method 4 – copy the MSWrd632.wpc file
Another way to solve this problem is to copy the MSWrd632.wpc file from another computer to the computer that is having problems.
The only problem is that it is less secure and makes your computer vulnerable to a possible security breach, so do not do this unless it is necessary or that computer is not connected to the Internet.
You can usually find this file in the following path:
C: Program Files Common Files Microsoft Shared TextConv
That’s all! If the problem persists, please leave a comment here and I’ll try to help! Enjoy!
