Recently, users often ask me the question: how to open a link in Internet Explorer in a new tab, and not in a new window. If you are using Firefox or Google Chrome, all links automatically open in a new tab, which is more convenient for me.
However, in IE, all links open in a new window, which is very annoying as it now supports multiple tabs! So how do you configure IE so that clicked links open in a new tab? Here’s how.
Open IE links in a new tab
First, open Internet Explorer and click on Tools and then Internet Options. Press the ALT key if you don’t see any menu items. If you are using newer versions of IE, this is now the gear icon.
Now click the Settings button in the Tabs section of the General tab.

In later versions of IE, you click the Tabs button under the Tabs section.
Finally, under the heading “When a pop-up is detected” select “Always open pop-ups in a new tab.”
This is it! Now, when you click on a link in Internet Explorer that should open in a new window, it will open in a new tab instead! You can also change the setting below it, Open links from other programs in to open in a new tab in the current one. Thus, if you click on a link on the Internet in an email, etc., It will open in the current IE window as a new tab. Enjoy!
