The name of your new iPhone includes your real name by default. If you don’t use a nickname for your Apple ID or when setting up your iPhone, your real name will also appear in your iPhone’s name. Here’s how to change the name of your iPhone.

Why You Should Change Your iPhone’s Name

Because your iPhone’s name includes your real name by default, your privacy may be compromised via AirDrop. If other iPad or iPhone users try to share files via AirDrop, they may see your name unless you disable AirDrop.

Your iPhone’s name is also used for iCloud and Personal Hotspot, which lets you create a Wi-Fi network using your iPhone. Your real name may be revealed when you share your cellular data with others via a Wi-Fi hotspot.

If you want to keep your real name private, it’s best to change your device’s name to something else. Another reason to try a new name for your iPhone is if you have multiple Apple devices at home. Let’s say you have two iPhones (one for work and one for personal use). Using a different device name allows you to quickly identify them from the Find My app.

This is especially useful if you use Find My iPhone to find your lost phone. It’s much easier to remember a name like “STM’s Working iPhone” than “iPhone (2)”.

You can also use your Apple ID to see a list of devices connected to your iCloud account. When you sell or give away your Apple products, if your phone’s name is unique, it’s much easier to identify and remove it from your Apple ID.

Since your Apple Watch is associated with your iPhone, it’s wise to use easily identifiable names for your iPhones. When you’re trying to sell both your iPhone and Apple Watch, you can use the iPhone name as a quick way to check which phone the watch is linked to.

If your iPhone’s display or touchscreen isn’t working properly, you can change its name using iTunes on Microsoft Windows devices and older macOS devices, or the Finder on newer Macs. To do this, connect your iPhone to your computer using the charging cable.

On a new MacBook or desktop Mac, open Finder and click your device name in the left sidebar. You will see your iPhone’s current name on the right. Click the name, type in a new name, and press Enter/Return on your keyboard. This will change the name of your iPhone.

Changing the name of your iPhone is the first step towards customizing your iPhone. You must go ahead and configure the Control Center and AirPods settings. It’s also a good idea to explore the shortcuts on your iOS device to take advantage of the automations on your iPhone.

With iOS 16, scheduled for release in Fall 2022, you can further customize your iPhone’s home screen and lock screen. For those who like to customize their gadgets as much as possible, it’s time to become an iPhone user
