With NFC on iPhone, you can do so much other than Apple Pay. One is the ability to create your own NFC tags. With the release of iOS 13, you can now write NFC tags on your iPhone. Let’s see how.
How to create custom NFC tags using iPhone
NFC is a wireless data transmission technology similar to Bluetooth, but with a few key differences. The NFC tag can store a variety of data, from ID credentials to custom triggers for launching shortcuts. Plus, these tags are very cheap, making them ideal for creative use.
To program an NFC tag on your iPhone, you’ll need the latest iOS 13, iPhone 7 or newer, and of course, some inexpensive NFC tags from Amazon.
1. Start by installing the NFC Tools app from the App Store on your iPhone. After downloading the application, click “Write”. A new page will open, click “Add Entry” to create an entry for the NFC tag.
2. You can download text, url, email, contact card, phone number, etc. on the NFC tag. For demonstration, I’ll add a URL to the NFC tag. Add the URL to this field and click OK. You will now see the populated list in the app with the URL data. Click the “Write” button to start the process.
3. The application will prompt you to move the tag to the iPhone. Take the NFC tag and touch it near the top of the iPhone. It will write the tag and give you visual and tactile feedback, which means the tag was successfully written.
The tag will now ask for a notification every time it is read by the device. You can try it on your iPhone and it should work and open the url you saved on it.
Most of these tags are overwritten, which means you can write new data to the tag over and over, making it really customizable. You can check the status of the tag in the app by clicking the Read button.
It was a quick way to create custom NFC tags by writing them with a simple app. There are many unusual projects that can be created using NFC as a trigger.
