Instagram is quickly overtaking other social media as a place to post your selfie, lunch, and navel photos. But what if you want to keep a copy of the image while scrolling?
Unlike other sites such as Facebook, you cannot right-click an image and select Save As. There is a Save As option, but you can only save it as an HTML web page, not in an image format.
Get your version
If you are not too worried about the size of the image, you can simply take a screenshot and then reduce it to the desired size. I do this very often.
But if someone posted a truly sensational image and you want the full size version, you need to go a little further – and this can only be done on a computer, not the Instagram mobile app.
If this is your first time seeing the image on your mobile device, you will need to bookmark it to find it easily again. Just click the bookmark icon to the right of the image.
Now go to your author’s Instagram page on your desktop and click the “Saved” section. Now click on the image you just bookmarked.
Now go to Instantgram, which is a browser bookmarklet. Drag the bookmarklet from the rectangle on the page to the browser panel.
Go back to the Instagram image and click the Instantgram bookmarklet once.
A new tab will open with a full-sized version of the image.
Now you can save the image as an image and not as a silly HTML page.
I don’t understand why Instagram chooses to upload images so hard, especially when everyone knows how to take screenshots these days. It’s also a bit inconvenient that this can only be done on a desktop computer and not on a mobile device.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that you can go for these extra lengths and end up not much larger than your image size if you just took a screenshot of it first. There is no guarantee that the original poster image originally loaded something grand.
