A black desktop screen can be caused by loose connections on your computer’s circuit board or various cords. Check the adapter plug to make sure it is securely attached to the monitor and connected to a power source for proper electrical current.

Make sure the video cable connections are securely attached to the back of the computer and monitor, and the graphics card is properly seated on the motherboard, and all cables and wires are securely and correctly connected.

If you do not see the standby indicator when you plug the monitor into a power outlet, there may be a problem with the monitor or the power cable. You can also try using a different cable or connection if you see the standby indicator but no signal from your computer.

Disconnect all external devices such as mouse, hard drive, or keyboard and restart your computer. If the black screen disappears, connect each of these peripherals one at a time to determine the culprit and update its drivers.

Make the display wake up

Not all black desktop screen problems in Windows 10 indicate a serious problem with hardware or other components. Your display may not be detected by Windows 10, in which case you can use keyboard keys to force the display to wake up.

To do this, press the Windows + CTRL + SHIFT + B keys at the same time. This will restart your computer’s graphics drivers and fix some basic problems.

Alternatively, press CTRL + ALT + DEL on your keyboard, press the power button in the lower-right corner of your screen, and click Restart to restart your computer. Your computer will restart without a black screen.

The black desktop screen issue could be caused by a Windows 10 update issue, so using the above keyboard shortcut can help you get out of various conditions, including a black screen.

You can also check to see if the brightness levels of the computer display have increased or if the device has reduced the display to save power.

Try another monitor to check for a defective video card

The main causes of faulty graphics cards are manufacturer defects or damage, but you can check if your graphics card is to blame or if a replacement is needed by trying it on a different monitor and checking for the presence of the display. If the second monitor has a normal display, then the current one is out of order.

Check your computer motherboard for damage

Your graphics card might work fine, but your motherboard might not. Everything in your computer case connects to this large motherboard, which allows them to interact and communicate properly. If the motherboard has a short circuit due to a power surge or a voltage spill, it will not be able to read and use the connected cards or components and will eventually fail.

Inspect it for damage and try using a different graphics card to see if the display reappears. If not, replace the entire board.

Repair or replace your monitor

A black desktop screen can also indicate that the monitor has reached the end of its useful life due to factors such as humidity or high humidity levels, or faulty electronics inside the monitor. If you connect to another computer, but it does not work, then the monitor is defective and needs to be replaced.

Boot into Safe Mode

In Safe Mode, Windows 10 starts up with the simplest and most important apps and programs so you can know if there is anything else causing your desktop to black screen.

To enter Safe Mode when your screen is black, press the power button on your computer and restart your computer. Repeat this process three times to activate the automatic recovery feature or diagnostic mode.

Then click the Advanced Startup Menu and select the Troubleshoot option.
