Face ID is the easiest way to unlock your iPhone, authorize app purchases, and sign into third-party apps. Registering your face for a Face ID is a simple process. However, you may run into some problems along the way.
“Face ID not available” is a common error that many iPhone users face when setting up Face ID. This guide covers possible ways to troubleshoot Face ID on your iPhone.
Note. Face ID is only supported on iPhone models with a rectangular notch at the top of the screen, from iPhone X and up. This Apple Support document contains a complete list of iPhone and iPad devices that support facial authentication.
1. Set up Face ID Correctly
When setting up Face ID, make sure your face is correctly positioned in the camera frame. After that, move your head in a circle and make sure that the Face ID setup agent captures all the corners of your face.
You also need to scan your face twice, so make sure you complete both face scans. Otherwise, iOS may not be able to set up Face ID. Finally, if you’re using an iPhone, position it vertically in portrait orientation; scanning in landscape orientation may fail.
Note. If you’re using an iPad, you can set up and use Face ID in either portrait or landscape orientation.
As a reminder, let’s walk through the process of properly setting up Face ID on the iPhone.
Go to the Face ID menu on your iPhone (Settings > Face ID & Passcode) and enter your iPhone passcode. Tap Set Face ID.
Read the instructions for more information and click Get Started to continue. Hold your iPhone upright in portrait orientation and frame your face. Move your head in a circular motion until the green progress bar completes the circle. When the first Face ID scan is complete, frame your face again and complete the second face scan. Press Done when the phone displays a message “Face ID not configured.” Lock your iPhone and check if Face ID works.
While you can use Face ID with sunglasses, masks, hats, scarves, and more, they can break the setup process. If the problem persists, remove all accessories from your face and rescan.
2. Move Your iPhone Closer to Your Face
Your iPhone must be within arm’s length (or closer) of your face to set up and use your Face ID. Apple recommends staying 25-50cm away.
If your iPhone isn’t scanning your face when setting up Face ID, move your face closer to your iPhone and try again. Again, remember to position your face in the camera frame and move your head in a circular motion.

3. Clean Your iPhone’s TrueDepth Camera
The TrueDepth camera system on your iPhone is the heart and soul of Face ID. This is a TrueDepth camera that creates a depth map and an infrared image of your face when you set up your Face ID. The notch at the top of your iPhone’s display houses the TrueDepth camera system.
If you can’t set up Face ID, make sure the TrueDepth camera is not obstructed. Wipe the iPhone cutout with a clean, soft, dry cloth. This will remove dirt, oil, and other particles blocking the TrueDepth camera. If your phone case or screen protector is covering the iPhone notch, remove it and try scanning Face ID again.
4. Set up Face ID with Accessibility Options
Face ID enrollment can also fail if you have facial or vision problems. In this case, set up your iPhone’s Face ID using Accessibility Options. This feature allows you to quickly set up your Face ID without having to scan your entire face. The TrueDepth camera captures your face from multiple angles and sets up your Face ID with a partial scan.
Here’s how to set up Face ID in Accessibility mode:
Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode, enter your iPhone’s passcode, and tap Set Up Face ID. Follow the instructions and scan your face when prompted.
Click Accessibility Options on the camera frame screen. Then click Use Incomplete Circle and click Done on the next screen to complete the setting.
5. Reboot or Force-Restart Your iPhone
Rebooting your iPhone is an easy fix for temporary software glitches affecting Face ID. Turn off your iPhone, turn it back on, and try setting up Face ID again.
Press and hold your iPhone’s side button and any of the volume buttons. Move the slider to the right to turn off iPhone.
Alternatively, open the Settings app, select General, tap Shut down, and move the slider to the right.
Wait about 10 seconds until your iPhone turns off completely. After that, press and hold the side button of your iPhone until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
Force restart your iPhone
If your iPhone freezes and won’t turn off, force restart it. Press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
Try setting up Face ID from scratch and see if restarting your iPhone fixes the problem.
6. Reset Your iPhone’s Settings
Updating your iOS settings can also fix issues preventing your iPhone from setting up Face ID. Please note that resetting your iPhone will remove all location, privacy, and network settings. The operation will also remove any Apple Pay cards associated with your device. However, your data and accounts are not deleted.
Follow the instructions to reset your iPhone:
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone and tap Reset.
Select Reset All Settings and enter your iPhone passcode. Select “Reset all settings” again at the confirmation prompt.
If your iPhone is running iOS 14 or earlier, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings to reset it.
Wait for your iPhone to turn back on and set up Face ID before doing anything else.
7. Update Your iPhone
Software-related issues (buggy or outdated operating system) can also cause Face ID to crash. If you still can’t set up Face ID, update your iPhone and try again.
Connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network and go to Settings > General > Software Update. Click “Download and Install” to update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS.
