Is your TV displaying a black screen or “No Signal” message when connected to PlayStation 5? The problem could be a faulty HDMI cable, dirty or damaged ports, incorrect video input (on the TV), etc.
This post outlines the troubleshooting steps to take if your PS5 won’t connect to your TV or monitor.
1. Check Your PS5 Indicator Light
When you turn on the PS5, the white light should be constantly on. If the console is not lit, it is off and will not send video signals to the TV. A solid orange light means your PS5 is in rest mode. Turn your PS5 on or wake it up from rest mode to restore the visuals.
Press the power button on your console, or press the PS button on your PS5 controller. Then wait a few seconds and check if your TV is displaying images from the console.
Contact PlayStation Support if your PS5’s light is flashing red. This means that the console is overheating and needs to be repaired.
2. Reboot Your PS5
Console freezes if your PS5 is constantly blue or keeps flashing white or blue. Restarting the console may resolve the issue.
Unplug your PS5 power cord from the wall outlet, wait 60 seconds, and plug your console back in. Make sure the HDMI cable is connected properly and turn your console back on.
3. Reinsert the HDMI Cable
Bad cable connections can disrupt the video signal from PS5 to TV. Insert one end of the HDMI cable into the TV port and make sure it is fully inserted.
Plug the other end of the cable into the HDMI port on the back of your PS5 console. Make sure the connection is tight and secure, but don’t force the cable in as you may damage the HDMI port.
Turn on the PlayStation 5 and set the TV’s input source to the HDMI port that the console is connected to.
4. Verify TV Video Input Source
The PlayStation 5 console connects TVs and monitors via a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI). If your TV or monitor has multiple HDMI ports, make sure the HDMI port that your PS5 is connected to is selected as the video input source.
Keep pressing the Input or Source button on your TV remote until images from the HDMI input your PS5 is connected to are displayed. Again, make sure your PS5 is turned on when you change your TV’s input source.
5. Disconnect HDMI Accessories
HDMI splitters (or HDMI switches) allow you to exchange audio and video signals between multiple devices. For example, you can connect your PlayStation 5 to multiple TVs or monitors using an HDMI splitter. Similarly, a splitter allows you to connect multiple consoles to a single TV.
If the HDMI splitter is not compatible with your TV or PS5, it may interrupt the connection between both devices.
Remove any HDMI splitter connected to your PS5 or TV and connect your console to your TV directly. If your TV detects the PS5 after doing this, the problem is with the HDMI splitter. When purchasing a new HDMI splitter, make sure it is compatible with PS5.
6. Try A Different HDMI Cable
Counterfeit or counterfeit third party cables may not connect the PS5 to your TV or monitor. Connect your PlayStation 5 to your TV using the HDMI to HDMI cable that came with the console. Purchase a replacement from any nearest authorized SONY store or dealer if the original HDMI cable is broken or damaged.
You can use a third-party HDMI cable. However, make sure it is an Ultra High Speed (or HDMI 2.1) cable with the HDMI logo/label on both connectors.
While the PS5 has an HDMI 2.1 port and works best with HDMI 2.1 cables, you can still connect the console to TVs with older HDMI standards. If your TV does not have HDMI 2.1 ports, you can connect your PS5 using HDMI 2.1 cables.
HDMI 2.1 cables (or Ultra High Speed HDMI cables) are backward compatible with older HDMI standards/devices. However, your TV will not play video games at the highest resolution or refresh rate because it is using the old HDMI port.
7. Try a Different HDMI Port
Move the HDMI cable to a different port on the TV and check if both devices are connected. Don’t forget to switch your TV’s input source to the new HDMI port you connected your PS5 to.
8. Change the TV HDMI Signal Format
Some TV brands (such as SONY) recommend changing the HDMI signal format of your TV if your PS5 or other devices are not connected via HDMI. Let’s say your TV’s HDMI signal format is set to “Standard”, switching to “Advanced” might solve the problem. Some TV brands/models have this option as “Advanced Format” or “Advanced Format (8K)”.
If your TV has multiple HDMI ports, change the signal format of the specific HDMI port your PS5 is connected to.
Enhanced HDMI is a high quality signal format that fully utilizes the bandwidth of your TV’s HDMI port. Plus, the improved signal format ensures you get 4K HDR gameplay on PS5.
Switch to “Standard” signal format if your PS5 will not connect to a TV with advanced HDMI settings. Refer to your TV’s instruction manual or contact the manufacturer for specific instructions on how to switch the HDMI signal format.
9. Power Cycle Your TV
Turn off the TV if problems persist. Turn off the TV using the remote control or unplug the power adapter from the wall outlet. Wait about a minute, plug your TV back in and set your TV’s input source to the HDMI port your PS5 is connected to
10. Clean the PS5 HDMI Port
The presence of foreign material in your PS5’s HDMI port may interfere with the console’s connection to your TV. Check your PS5’s HDMI port for dirt, dust, debris, or dirt. Use a soft bristle brush to remove foreign material. If you have a can of compressed air, a few blasts into the HDMI port can remove dust and dirt.
You should also clean your TV’s HDMI port(s), especially if it can’t connect to any device.
11. Update Your TV’s Firmware
If you are using a smart TV, software glitches may prevent displaying images from HDMI devices. Go to your TV’s settings menu, update its firmware or operating system, and check if that solves the problem.
We also recommend that you set your TV to automatically update the firmware when a new version is available. Check “Automatic Software Update” or “Automatic Firmware Update” in your TV’s software settings menu.
You should also be able to update your TV’s firmware from the manufacturer’s website – depending on the make or model of your TV. Contact your TV manufacturer for more information on installing the latest system software on your TV.
12. Try A Different TV Or Monitor
Connect your PS5 to another TV or monitor using a compatible high speed HDMI cable. The console’s HDMI port is most likely defective if your new monitor or TV is not receiving video signals from your PS5. Try connecting your monitor to a different cable and see if it works.
13. Change PS5 Video Output Resolution in Safe Mode
Some PS5 users have resolved the black screen issue by changing their PS5’s video resolution to HDCP 1.4. High-Bandwidth Digital Content Production (HDCP) is a content protection protocol to prevent unauthorized recording of content on the PS5.
PS5 supports the latest version of HDCP (HDCP 2.3) and automatically switches between other versions (HDCP 2.2 and HDCP 1.4) depending on your TV model. Set your PS5 to use HDCP 1.4 if your TV displays nothing but a black screen.
To do this, you must first boot your PS5 in safe mode.
Press and hold the Power button on your PS5 for three seconds to turn off your game console.
Release the power button and wait for the console to turn off. Press and hold the power button again until you hear the PS5 double beep.
Note that the second beep will usually sound about seven seconds after the first beep. So keep holding the power button and release it after the second beep. This will boot your PS5 into safe mode.
Connect the DualSense controller to the console using the USB cable and press the PS button on the controller.
Select “Change video output”.
1- Select Change Resolution.
2 – Select HDCP 1.4 Only and select Restart on the confirmation page.
Your TV should now be able to detect visual cues from your game console. Make sure your PS5 is properly connected to your TV with a compatible cable.
Get Gaming
If your PS5 still won’t connect to the TV even in safe mode, its HDMI port or motherboard may be damaged. Contact PlayStation Support or visit a PlayStation Repair Center to have your PS5 checked for hardware issues. You can get a new console if your PS5 is still under warranty and the connectivity issue is due to a factory defect.
If your PS5 connects to monitors other than your TV, contact the manufacturer or reset your TV to factory settings.
