How to Get Automatic Dark Theme on Android 10 Devices

How to Get Automatic Dark Theme on Android 10 Devices.

Android 10 comes with a lot of useful features like Smart Reply for all messaging apps, built-in screen recorder, Wi-Fi sharing via QR codes, gestures, and everyone’s favorite has its own dark mode. But there is one caveat: you will have to manually enable the dark theme in the display settings. There is no built-in option to automatically schedule dark and light modes like there is a blue light filter.

Check out the free Automatic Dark Theme app from developer Charles Annick that lets you do just that. For example, it can automatically schedule dark mode to turn on at 10:00 pm and switch back to light at 7:00 am. I tried this app on our Pixel and for some reason it didn’t work. However, it worked fine on my Pixel 3.

The app gives you setup instructions, but in general you need to follow these instructions.

  1. Download the automatic dark theme for Android 10 from the Google Play store.
  2. Enable USB debugging on your Android phone in developer settings.
  3. Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable
  4. Run the following ADB command from the command line on your computer.

adb shell pm grant com.cannic.apps.automaticdarktheme android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS

After successfully transmitting ADB commands, simply open the app on your phone and press the switch next to the Enable button. Then you can turn dark mode on / off based on sunrise and sunset or according to the time intervals you choose.

Overall, this app will be useful to many users who often forget to switch their night mode. At the time of this writing, Android 10 is available for all Pixel devices and has recently arrived on the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro. Android 10 is coming soon to all popular flagship devices like the Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, Redmi K20 Pro, Huawei P30 Pro, and many more. However, if your device is not in the queue, check out this article on popular Android apps that support dark mode and how to enable it.
