How to increase microphone volume in Windows 10.
Nothing gets in the way of a virtual meeting or conference call like another person who continually asks you to speak up or repeat what you said.
More often than not, the issue is related to your network, Wi-Fi connection, or, in some cases, microphone.
Microphone problems can affect the sound and quality of your video or voice calls, in addition to the problem with recording audio in Windows 10. The problem is especially pronounced when using the microphone with conferencing applications such as Skype, where voice quality sometimes drops, or when playing in a high-octane multiplayer context.

Preliminary Checks to Boost Microphone Volume in Windows 10
If others can’t hear you, you should check the following before trying the following fixes:
- Make sure the mute button on your headset is not active.
- Correctly connect your headset or microphone to your computer.
- Make sure the microphone is positioned correctly.
- Make sure your headset or microphone is set as the default recording device. To do this, select Start> Settings> System> Sound and select your microphone in the Select Input Device field.
- Speak into the microphone while checking the microphone tests to make sure it is working. If the line moves from left to right, the microphone is working, if not, then your microphone is not picking up sound.
- If you are on Skype and the microphone volume is low, select More> Settings in the upper right corner of your contacts list and select your microphone or headset under Microphone under Audio & Video … Also make sure your preferred speaker or headset is selected under Speakers.
If none of these help to increase the microphone volume, try the following fixes.

1. Adjust Microphone Volume
If you or others can’t hear you during a conversation or virtual meeting, here’s how to increase the microphone volume in Windows 10.
- Right-click the sound icon on the far right of the taskbar and select Sounds …
- Then right-click the active microphone (indicated by a green checkmark next to it) and select Properties.
- Go to the Levels tab under Microphone Properties and adjust the gain level, which is set to 0.0 dB by default. You can use the slider to adjust up to +40 dB and check if the other person hears you clearly and if the volume level is correct.
Note. You can also go to Microphone Properties> Advanced tab and uncheck “Allow an application to exercise executive control over this device” if increasing the volume doesn’t help.
How to use the control panel to adjust the microphone volume
You can also increase the microphone volume using Control Panel in Windows 10.
- To do this, open Control Panel> Hardware and Sound.
- Select sound.
- In the Sound pop-up window, select the Recording tab.
- You will see microphones connected to your computer. Right-click the active microphone and select Properties. From here, you can select the Levels tab and adjust the microphone volume sliders to increase its power.
2. Give Apps Permission to Use Your Microphone
If you just updated Windows 10 and your microphone is not detected, you can give apps access to the microphone and check if the volume is working again.
- To allow applications to use the microphone, select Start> Settings> Privacy.
- Select your microphone under Application Permissions.
- Then select “Change” and enable “Allow applications to access your microphone”.
3. Run Windows 10 Audio Troubleshooter
If your PC doesn’t display a Microphone Gain option, you can regain access to it by running the built-in audio troubleshooter to check and fix any audio issues.
You should now be able to use the Microphone Boost feature to increase the microphone volume.
4. Update Your Microphone’s Audio Drivers
Outdated or incompatible audio drivers may cause the microphone to malfunction. To fix this problem, check and update its audio drivers, and then check if the volume levels have returned to normal.

- Under Select which Microsoft applications can access your microphone, select the applications that you want to grant access to, and then set Allow desktop applications to access your microphone to “On”.

- To do this, open Control Panel and select the “View By” option in the upper right corner.
- Select large icons.
- Then find and select Troubleshoot.
- Select Troubleshoot Audio Recording under Hardware and Sound, and then check if the Microphone Boost option is available.
