What you need to join a Zoom meeting

You don’t need an account to join a Zoom meeting. But you need a meeting ID or invitation URL.

When a host starts a session, you can join, unless the option is set to allow you to join before the host arrives. Or you can sign up for a Zoom account that includes your contact information. Then, when the host establishes a conference call, you can be contacted directly through Zoom without requiring an invite URL.

Download the app to join a Zoom meeting on desktop

Joining a Zoom meeting is easy. You can open the invitation link or take a phone call. From the invitation, enter the meeting by clicking the link or URL.

At this point, you will be presented with a link to download the Zoom desktop app for your PC or Mac

Open the Zoom desktop client and join the meeting in one of the following ways.

  • Click Join Meeting Without Login.
  • Sign in to your Zoom account and click Join.

  • If you do not want to use your display name, you can change it if you are signed in to your Zoom account.
  • Set the permissions for audio and video.

Open the Zoom desktop app you downloaded from above. In the upper right corner, click “View Gallery”.

Join a Zoom meeting on Linux

Open the Zoom desktop client. Click Join a meeting without logging in, or log in and click Join.

Enter the meeting ID you received from the organizer and your name as you want it to appear. To change the display name, you can do so by logging into Zoom.

Choose how you want to join the meeting by checking or unchecking the boxes next to Do not connect to audio and Disconnect my video.

The process is the same on mobile devices as it is on desktops. The host sends you a link in text or electronic form. Or, if you’ve provided the organizer with Zoom contact details, the invitation is sent from the app.

Then you click the URL in the invitation to join the meeting. If your smartphone has the Zoom mobile app, clicking on the meeting link will launch Zoom Cloud Meetings and automatically connect you.

If you haven’t downloaded the Zoom app, you will see a prompt to download and launch the app. You don’t need to open a Zoom account to join any meetings.

Join Zoom on Android

Open the Zoom app on your Android device. If you haven’t downloaded it yet, go to the Google Play Store and download it.

Join the meeting:

  • Click Join Meeting Without Logging In.
  • Sign in and then click Join.
  • Enter your display name and meeting ID.
  • Select video and audio options.
  • Click Join Meeting.

Join the meeting after logging into Zoom by clicking Join. Enter the appointment ID and your display name. If you are logged in and do not want to display the default name, you can change it.

How to record a Zoom meeting as a participant

By default, only the host is allowed to record video conferences. Participants must obtain permission from the organizer.

If your host is new to Zoom, tell me how easy it is to let you record your meeting. All the organizer needs to do is:

  • Select Manage Participants.
  • Hover over your name.
  • Click the blue More button and then Allow. Write it down and you can record the meeting.

The Zoom Raise Hand is the best way to let the organizer know you have a question without interrupting the meeting.

Select Participants at the bottom center of your computer screen and click Raise Hand.

The facilitator will see that you have actually raised your hand. To lower your hand, press the same button, which will now be called Lower Hand.
