Whether you work at home or in the office, social media is always the biggest distraction. In addition to numerous ads, you receive countless updates from family, friends, colleagues, and businesses. And while some of these updates interest you, most are a mess.
The problem with having too much information on your social media feeds is that it takes too long for you to sort through the unnecessary and get to the important. Of course, one way to get rid of your feed clutter is to remove people from your friends or block them.
However, if this seems too extreme for you and you still want these people on your radar, you can simply disable someone on Instagram or Facebook. This way, you never have to see their posts or stories on the Internet again.
How to Mute Someone on Facebook
Keeping up with your Facebook friends’ updates can be exhausting. Fortunately, Facebook gives you several ways to organize your space on the platform. You can make lists of Facebook friends and even keep them secret to hide your friends on the platform from each other.
But most importantly, you can rid your feed of someone else’s messages without deleting them from your friends. Here’s how to mute Facebook.
- Go to your Facebook news feed.
- Find the message from the person you want to disconnect.
- Click on the three dots in the upper right corner of the message.
- Click Postpone 30 Days.
This is a temporary fix, as their posts will reappear in your timeline over time. If you prefer to hide this person’s messages, unsubscribe from them completely.
To do this on Facebook, tap the three dots in the upper right corner of that person’s post. Then click “Unsubscribe”. Alternatively, you can go to that person’s Facebook profile. In the upper right corner, find the “Next” drop-down menu. Then select “Unsubscribe”.
How to turn on the sound
No matter how many times you snooze or unsubscribe from someone, Facebook won’t let them know. This way, you can still stay connected with people and you will always have the opportunity to add their updates back to your news feed.
If after a while you decide to turn on your Facebook friend’s microphone, here’s how to do it.
- Find the person you want to include and go to their Facebook profile.
- In the upper right corner, find a drop-down menu that says On Hold.
- Select End Snooze.
How to Mute Someone on Facebook Messenger
For those who want to stay connected with friends but don’t want to waste time watching their updates, using Messenger as a standalone app is a good choice. The good news is that you can go even further by filtering out some of the notifications you receive from friends.
Here’s what you need to do to mute your Messenger chat sound.
- Open your Messenger chat list.
- Find the chat you want to disable and click on it.
- On Android, click the round Info button. On iOS, click the name of the conversation at the top.
- Go to “Notifications” and select “Disconnect Conversation”. Here you will have many different options to mute the sound for a specific period of time (from 15 minutes to 24 hours). Or, you can turn them off until you decide to manually cancel it.
Alternatively, you can go to Ignore Messages, and then the entire conversation will be moved to the Spam folder.
How to turn on the sound
When you choose to turn off Facebook conversation notifications for a certain period of time, they automatically reappear in Messenger after that time. Otherwise, you’ll have to go back to your notification settings to manually enable the person’s microphone.
How to Mute Someone on Instagram
For a long time, it was impossible to disable a user on Instagram. Then, in the end, the network added a mute button. So, if you feel like you’ve seen enough of someone’s Insta updates and want to tone them down a bit, here’s how to mute someone on Instagram.
- Open your Instagram feed.
- Find the message from the person you want to disconnect.
- Click on the three dots in the upper right corner of the message.
- Click Mute on the menu. Then select Disable Recordings or Disable Recordings and History.
If you just want to ignore someone’s stories, you’ll have to go to their Instagram profile instead. From there, follow these steps.
- At the top of their profile, find and click the Next drop-down menu.
- Select “Mute Sound”.
- Choose to turn off messages or stories.
After you mute a user, you can only see their posts and / or stories by visiting their Instagram page. The app will not notify them about your actions, and you can always enable them manually.
How to turn on the sound
If you decide to include someone on Instagram, you’ll have to do it manually by going to their profile page.
To do this, click the Next drop-down menu and select Mute Sound. Then select Posts, Stories, or both if you want to return all of that person’s updates to your Instagram feed.
Where to find the list
If you ever want to see people you have muted to, you can find them in the special list of muted accounts. Here’s where to find it on Instagram.
- Go to your Instagram profile.
- Click the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner to open the Menu.
- Go to Settings> Privacy.
- Scroll down to Connections and click Disabled Accounts.
There you will find a list of all the people you have disabled on Instagram.
