How to Program NFC Tags – Step by Step Guide With Example.
There are many ways to program your NFC tags. If you want to perform general actions like: text, open a specific url, switch system settings, etc., you can use apps like NFC tools. It’s free and easy for simple things. However, since we are talking about programming NFC tags, in this article I will program my NFC tag to automate my morning and night routine.
For example, I programmed one of my NFC tags for night-morning mode and placed it next to my bed. So every day when I go to bed, I don’t have to worry about putting my phone to sleep. All I have to do is just touch my phone to the NFC tag and everything will be automatically set. This is what it looks like.
Night – turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and open the Journal app (I prefer to record my daily diet and what I did during the day in the Goqii goal tracking app).
Morning – Turn on, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS. Also, remind me to drink some water and open the Workout app so I can prepare appropriately for my gym schedule. It also reminds me of what to eat before training.
This is a small example of how NFC tags are used in real life, but there are many other great things you can do, depending on how creative you are.

You will need
NFC tagging program on Android
There are many apps on the play store that allow NFC programming, but I like Trigger the most as it is free, easy to use and offers many templates on offer, such as: saving time while driving, mute my phone while I sleep. etc.
The application consists of two parts – a trigger and an action. As the name suggests, a trigger is what triggers an action, in which case the trigger will move the phone closer to the NFC tags and the actions will toggle WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.
Follow easy steps to program NFC chips
1. Download and install Trigger from the Play Store.
2. After starting the application, we need to create a new task. Go to “My Task” and click on the little plus sign in the lower right corner.
3. In the next Add Trigger window, click NFC as the trigger.
4. Once selected, tap Next to set up the NFC task.
5. In the next step, you can configure the trigger by adding restrictions (eg date, time, Wi-Fi, etc.). However, this is optional. If you want to trigger actions every time you tap on NFC, you can skip this step by tapping Done.
6. Now you need to choose the action you want to take when your phone comes in contact with the NFC tag. This is where all the magic happens. Click Next to get started.
On the next screen, you will see various options – Wireless & networks, Bluetooth, Display, Social networks, App, etc.

In this case, follow these steps.
- Wireless & networks Wi-Fi On / Off. – check
- Wireless On. / Off. GPS – Check (requires root).
- Bluetooth On / Off. – check it
- Apps and shortcuts Open apps – check it
- Apps and shortcuts Speak text – check it
A new pop-up window will open, configure the following:
- WiFi On / Off – Disable
- GPS On / Off – Disable
- Bluetooth On / Off – Disable
- Open source application – Goqii
- Speak text – “Don’t forget to drink, don’t drink”
After that click “Next” and on the next screen give your task a name and click “Next”.
Then select the switch task to run in the morning, the process is much the same. Click on the plus sign at the top and repeat the following steps. Let’s call this “Morning Mode”.

- Bluetooth On / Off. – check it
- Apps and shortcuts Open apps – check it
- Apps and shortcuts Speak text – check it
A new pop-up window will open, configure the following:
- On. / Off. WiFi – Enable
- GPS On / Off – On
- On / Off. Bluetooth – Turn on
- Open the app – Fitvate
- Say the text – “Don’t forget to eat before training”
If you’re happy with the changes, click Add to Tasks, give the task a name such as Morning Mode, and click Finish.
Bring the NFC tag to the back of your phone. All information will be instantly recorded on tags.

To copy or erase an NFC tag, tap the hamburger icon in the upper left corner and select More NFC Actions.
You can now use this tag with any NFC-enabled device. However, unless you are doing a general action like text, opening a specific url, toggling system settings, etc., you will need to install a trigger app on every phone you want to use to perform complex actions like we seen above.
Programming NFC Tags in Windows
Nokia NFC Writer is the most popular tool for writing NFC tags on Windows Phone. However, this was the only application I could find, although I was not impressed with its performance.
If you can also write your NFC chip from your Windows PC using GoTo tags. However, you will need to buy an optional NFC reader and writer to read / write NFC tags to your computer.
How to program NFC tags on iPhone
All iPhone 6 and later models are equipped with NFC, but you cannot use NFC tag recording equipment prior to iOS 13. If you are using iPhone 7 or later and have iOS 13 or later installed, you can easily create own NFC tags. You can check out this quick tutorial on how to create your own NFC tags.
