There are many advantages to rooting Nexus 5, 5X, 6, 6P, and 7 devices. Some of the benefits of rooting include gaining access to exclusive root-only apps, being able to flash any customized OS version, and even overclocking the processor with your own kernel.
Root allows you to make changes to the most basic system of your device, making it truly the customizable phone you’ve ever had. To root your devices, you need to follow certain procedures.
- Download CF-Root for Nexus 5 and extract it to your computer.
- Turn off your phone.
- Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons on at the same time to reboot into bootloader mode.
- Double click the root-windows.bat file in the CF-Root folder and your device will be rooted.
- Once your device is rooted, go to the Google Play Store and download and install the TWRP Recovery. app on your phone.
- Click on TWRP Flash in the main interface.
Nexus 5 root and install custom recovery on it
- Download CF-Root for Nexus 5 and extract it to PC.
- Turn off your phone.
- Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons at the same time to restart in bootloader mode.
- Double-click root-windows.bat in the CF-Root folder and it will root your device.
- Once your device is rooted, head to the Google Play Store and download and install TWRP Recovery. app on your phone.
- Click on TWRP Flash on the main interface.
- Select your device and TWRP file. Then click “Flash to Recovery”.
- Reboot your device after flashing recovery.
You are now rooted and have a custom recovery installed on the Nexus 5.
Unlock Bootloader:
- Go to Settings> Developer Options and enable USB debugging and OEM unlocking.
Nexus 5X Root
Unlock Bootloader:
- Go to Settings> Developer Options and enable both USB Debugging and OEM Unlock .
- Connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable.
- Download Fastboot. and extract it to your computer.
- Open the Fastboot. folder by holding Shift, right-clicking anywhere on an empty spot and choosing Open Command Window Here.
- Run the following commands, pressing Enter after each line.
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
- Then run the following command to restart your phone.
fastboot reboot
Flash TWRP Recovery.:
- Download the IMG file for TWRP Recovery. and save it in the Fastboot. folder.
- Go to Settings> Developer Options and enable USB debugging.
- Run the following command at a command prompt.
adb reboot bootloader
- Type the following and press Enter to perform TWRP recovery. Replace twrp.img with the actual filename.
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
- Restart your phone.
Root your Nexus 5X:
- Download SuperSU and transfer it to your phone.
- Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons at the same time. Then select “Recovery” from the menu on the screen.
- Click Install and install the SuperSU file.
- You are now root.
Unlock Bootloader:
- Go to Settings> Developer Options and enable OEM Unlock and USB Debugging.
Nexus 6 Root
Unlock Bootloader:
- Go to Settings> Developer Options and turn on both OEM Unlock and USB Debugging .
- Connect your phone to your computer.
- Download Fastboot. and extract it.
- Open the Fastboot. folder, press and hold Shift, right-click any blank space and select Open Command Window Here.
- Run the following command when starting the command line.
adb reboot bootloader
- Use the following command to unlock the bootloader.
fastboot oem unlock
- Use the following command to reboot the device.
reboot fastboot
Root a Nexus 6:
- Download CF-Root for Nexus 6 and extract it to your computer.
- Turn off your phone.
- Press and hold the volume down and power buttons to boot into bootloader mode.
- Connect your phone to your computer.
- Run the file named root-windows.bat from CF – Root folder.
- You are now root.
Install custom recovery:
- Download TWRP Recovery. and save it to the Fastboot. folder.
- Turn on USB debugging in Settings> Developer Options.
- Run the following command to load into the bootloader.
adb reboot bootloader
- Use the following command to flash the recovery. Replace twrp.img with your actual file name.
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Unlock Bootloader:
- On your phone, go to Settings> Developer Options and enable OEM Unlock and USB Debugging.
Nexus 6P Root
Unlock Bootloader:
- On your phone, go to Settings> Developer Options Turn on both OEM Unlock and USB Debugging .
- Connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable.
- Download and extract Fastboot. to your computer.
- Launch the Fastboot. folder, press and hold Shift, right-click anywhere on the screen and select Open Command Window Here.
- Run the following commands to unlock the bootloader.
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flashing unlock
- Use this command to reboot the phone.
reboot fastboot
Custom Recovery Firmware:
- Download TWRP Recovery. for Nexus 6P and save it in the Fastboot. folder.
- Turn on USB debugging in Settings> Developer Options on your phone.
- Connect your phone to your computer.
- Run the following command at a command prompt.
adb reboot bootloader
- Use the following command to install the recovery. Remember to replace twrp.img with the original name of your file.
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Root your Nexus 6P:
- Download SuperSU and move it to your phone.
- Turn off your phone.
- Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons to reboot into bootloader mode. Then select “Recovery”.
- Click Install and install the SuperSU file.
- You are now root.
- Download CF-Root for Nexus 7 and extract it.
- Turn off your phone.
- Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons.
- Connect your phone to your computer.
- Run root-windows.bat from the CF-Root folder.
- You are root.
- Download and install the TWRP Recovery. app.
- Click TWRP Flash.
Nexus 7 root and install custom recovery on it
- Download CF-Root for Nexus 7 and extract it.
- Turn off your phone.
- Press and hold Volume Down and Power .
- Connect your phone to a computer.
- Run -windows.bat from the CF-Root folder.
- You are rooted.
- Download and install TWRP Recovery. application.
- Click TWRP Flash .
- Select your device and click “Flash to Recovery”.
- Download the factory image for your phone and extract it to your computer.
- Turn off your Nexus device.
- Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons to reboot into bootloader mode.
- Launch a command prompt window in the unpacked folder of the factory image and run the following command:
flash-all.bat
Uninstall Nexus 5, 5X, 6, 6P, and 7
- Download Factory Image of your phone and extract it to computer.
- Turn off your Nexus device.
- Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons to restart in bootloader mode.
- Start a Command Prompt window in the unzipped factory image folder and run the following command:
flash-all.bat
flash-all.bat
- Wait while your phone is flashed with standard firmware.
- When the firmware is flashed, run the following command to re-lock your phone’s bootloader.
fastboot oem lock
- You are now back to non-rooted stock firmware for your Nexus phone.
