In addition to being a threat to your privacy and security, pop-ups can also be annoyingly persistent. From time to time they will appear on your screen and interfere with important tasks. This guide covers various ways to disable pop-ups on Android and iOS devices.
How to Stop Pop-Up Ads on Android Browsers
Many Android web browsers have pop-up blocking options hidden in the settings. Although some browsers have pop-up blocking enabled by default, you will need to manually enable this feature in other browsers.
In this section, we will show you how to stop all forms of pop-ups in some popular Android browsers.
Disable pop-up ads in Google Chrome
Many Android phones have Google Chrome set as the default browser. If you often encounter annoying ads and pop-ups while browsing the web through Chrome, here’s how to fix the problem.
Open Chrome, tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner and select “Settings”.Scroll to the “Advanced” section and click “Site Settings”.Click “Pop-ups and redirects”. >Enable popups and redirects.
This will block websites from displaying pop-ups in new tabs. Turn on Chrome’s built-in Adblock feature if some websites continue to display misleading pop-ups or ads in various forms.
Go back to the Site Settings menu, tap Ads, and turn on Ads to enable Chrome’s ad blocker on your device.
Disable pop-up ads in Opera
The Opera web browser is known to have several privacy and security tools. The built-in pop-up blocker tool, enabled by default, blocks all forms of pop-ups. You can also set the tool to block cookie hints.
Open Opera, tap the profile icon in the bottom left corner, scroll to the “Content” section and turn on the pop-up blocker.
If you’re annoyed by “Accept cookies” pop-ups on many websites, you can also disable them. Open the “Settings” menu, select “Ad Blocking” and choose whether you want to “Allow Acceptable Ads” or “Block Cookie Dialog Boxes”.
Disable pop-up ads in Microsoft Edge
Open Microsoft Edge, tap the menu icon, and select “Settings”.Select “Privacy and security”.Tap “Block ads”.Turn on “Block ads”. Disable the “Allow Acceptable Ads” option to enhance adblocking.
Disable pop-up ads in Mozilla Firefox
Firefox for Android lacks a built-in ad blocker, so you’ll have to install third-party ad blocking add-ons to stop the incessant pop-ups. AdGuard, AdBlock Plus and uBlock Origin are some of the best pop-up blocking ad blockers for Firefox.
Here’s how to install these add-ons on Firefox for Android.
Open Firefox, tap the three-dot menu icon in the bottom left corner and select “Settings”.Scroll to the “Advanced” section and click “Add-ons”.Click the plus sign (+) next to the blocker pop-up windows and select Add.
How to Block Pop-Up Ads on iPhone and iPad
iOS has a built-in pop-up blocker, but it only works with the Safari browser. However, many third-party web browsers also come with built-in ad blocking features. We will show you how to stop pop-ups on iPhone in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge.
Disable pop-up ads in Safari
If Safari is your default web browser, follow these steps to enable Safari’s security settings that block pop-ups.
Go to “Settings”, select “Safari”, scroll to the “General” section and check the “Block pop-up windows” box.
We also recommend that you turn on the “Warning about fraudulent websites” option. This will cause Safari to display a warning if you are on a (suspected) phishing website.
Scroll down to the “Privacy & Security” section in the Safari settings menu and turn on frequent warning about websites.
Pop-up Blocker in Google Chrome
If Google Chrome is the default browser on your OS device, here’s how to set the browser to block pop-ups.
Open the Chrome app, tap the three-dot menu icon in the bottom right corner, and select “Settings”.Select “Content settings”.Tap “Block pop-ups” and check the box “Block pop-ups”.< /li>li>

Open Microsoft Edge, tap the three-dot menu icon at the bottom and select “Settings”.Tap “Privacy and security”.Select “Block pop-ups” and turn on “Block pop-ups”. < /ol>
The Microsoft Edge mobile app also has an option to turn off ads. Enable this setting if some websites still display pop-ups despite a pop-up blocker.
On the “Privacy & Security” page, select “Block ads” and turn on “Block ads”.Click “Finish” to save your settings and reload websites that display unwanted pop-ups.
Pop-up Blocker in Mozilla Firefox
Tap the hamburger menu icon in the lower right corner and select “Settings”.Scroll to the “General” section and turn on “Block Pop-ups”.
If some websites continue to display incessant ads or pop-ups, turn on “Enhanced Tracking Protection” in Firefox instead. This is a security feature that blocks pop-ups, ads, browser fingerprinting, etc.
Return to the Firefox settings menu and tap “Tracking Protection” under “Privacy”. Turn on “Enhanced Tracking Protection”, set the protection level to “Standard”, and visit the website(s) that give you pop-ups . Switch to Strict protection level if pop-ups continue to appear.
Note. The Strict protection level blocks more persistent ads and pop-ups. Web pages will also load faster than usual. However, some website features may no longer work correctly.
Disable pop-up ads in Opera
Open Opera, tap the menu icon in the bottom left corner, select “Settings” and turn on the pop-up blocker.
Do you want to disable cookie requests on all web pages? Click “Block Cookie Conversations”, enable “Block Cookie Conversations” and choose whether you want to “Automatically Accept Cookie Conversations” or not.
Disable or Uninstall Bloatware and Adware
Unlike the iPhone, Android devices are more vulnerable to malware attacks. If your Android smartphone is running a non-standard Android OS, it is likely that the manufacturer, your network provider, or marketing companies have pre-installed malware and adware.
If your phone displays random pop-up ads on the home screen or in any application, identify the malware/adware that is causing the problem and remove it.
Use third-party app cleaners or file management apps to remove malware and adware. Alternatively, you can find them manually in the settings menu of the Android app. Performing a malware scan with antivirus and security applications can also help block pop-ups caused by malware.
We recommend that you boot into safe mode before uninstalling applications responsible for pop-ups. In safe mode, third-party applications will not run on your device, making it easier to remove malware.
Press and hold the phone’s power button to open the power menu. After that, touch and hold the Power Off option and select OK when prompted to Restart in Safe Mode.
Go to Settings > Apps & notifications > App info (or See all apps) and view the apps in the list.
If there is an app that you hardly use or don’t remember installing, uninstall it from your device. Select an app, click Uninstall and select OK.
Please note that you may not be able to uninstall some apps pre-installed by the device manufacturer. In this case, disable applications. This will turn off the app and hide it on your device.
Open the app info page, click Disable, and select Disable App at the confirmation prompt.
Update Your Devices
The benefits of updating your device’s operating system cannot be overstated. Many software updates/releases contain security definitions that control pop-ups and ads. So always make sure you have the latest OS on your device.
Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest iOS update available for your iPhone or iPad.
Go to Settings > System > Advanced > System Update and tap Check for updates to update your Android device.
Prevention is the Best Fix
If you have successfully blocked pop-ups on your device, make sure you prevent them from happening again in the future. Do not download or install apps outside of the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. If you can’t find the app you need in your device’s app store, install it directly from the developer’s official website.
