If it surprises you that Google is always listening to you, Google offers acceptable reasons for keeping the microphone on your mobile device open.

The OK Google feature on your phone should recognize the words “Google good” when you say them.
Google Assistant should recognize whenever you ask for help.
Google Maps should activate voice recognition when you say “Ok Google”.
Android Auto also activates voice recognition when you say “Ok Google”.

It may make you legal, but for many it is still unacceptable. And Google does this by forcing you to “approve” active listening when installing those apps. Most people are oblivious to the permissions they give these apps.

Where Are My Google Recordings?

You can find out what Google is listening to by opening Google records in your account.

1. In a web browser, go to Google My Activities and make sure you are signed in to your Google account. Scroll down to the Application and Web Search History section and select Manage Actions. Then select “Filter by Date and Product”.

2. A filter window with a list of parameters will open. Scroll down and check the box next to Voice and Sound. Select Apply.

This will filter your activity history only to voice and audio recordings recorded by Google.

How to Stop Google From Listening to You Constantly

There are several ways to prevent Google from listening to you all the time. One is to completely disable active listening on your Google account. However, this also requires you to trust Google to stop listening to all apps.

Another approach is to force active listening to stop and remove permissions for google apps. In this article, you will walk through each method to choose the one that you think best protects your privacy.

Disable Google Voice History

The easiest way to stop Google listening immediately is to simply turn off saving audio recordings to your Google account.

1. In your web browser, go to My Google Activities and in the right pane, select App & Web Search History.

2. The Application History and Web Search page will open. Uncheck the box next to Enable Audio Recordings.

If this setting is disabled, any voice commands you send to Google Assistant, Google Search, or Google Maps will not be logged into your Google account.

Note. This only means that incoming records are not saved. This is not to say that Google isn’t always listening to you. In order to turn off any eavesdropping on the part of Google, you need to take more drastic action, as described below.

Prevent Google Assistant from listening to you

The main app that listens to you the most is Google Assistant. This app is ready to answer your “Ok Google” statement.

You can turn off the use of the microphone in this application so that it listens to you all the time.

To do this:

1. Open the Android settings menu and tap Google.

2. In the next menu, select “Settings for Google Apps”.

3. Select “Search”, “Assistant & Voice”.

4. In the next settings menu, select “Voice”.

5. From the Voice menu, select Voice Match.

6. On the Voice Match screen, turn off the switch to the right of Hey Google.

This will disable Google Assistant from listening when you say “Hey Google”. Keep in mind that you will have to manually tap the microphone icon in the Google Assistant app to perform voice commands. However, if privacy is your main concern, this is a small price to pay.

Don’t let Android Auto listen to you

Another app that listens for voice commands is Android Auto. This app has a setting that allows you to disable this feature so that the app doesn’t always listen to you.

1. Launch Android Auto (phone screen version) and tap the menu icon.

2. From the Android Auto menu, select Settings.

3. From the Settings menu, select Hey Google.

4. In the next settings window, turn off the toggle switch to the right of Hey Google.

This will disable Android Auto from being constantly monitored when you say “Ok Google”. Again, keep in mind that you will need to manually trigger commands in Android Auto as you will no longer be able to trigger commands with your voice alone.

Prevent Google Maps from listening to you

If you’ve never checked the Google Assistant setting in the Google Maps app on your phone, then Google Maps can listen to you for voice commands as well. You can turn off this feature in the Google Maps app.

1. Launch Google Maps on your phone and tap the profile picture icon in the upper right corner to open the profile menu.

2. Select “Settings” to open the Google Maps settings menu.

3. Click “Navigation Settings” and in the next window select “Google Assistant Settings”.

4. On the Drive Mode screen, make sure the switch to the right of Drive Mode is off.

This will disable Google Assistant activation inside Google Maps. Google Maps won’t listen to you unless you manually tap the microphone icon on the home screen to trigger a voice command.

Prevent Google from listening to you

Another method you can use to turn off Google from listening to you is to turn off listening on the Google app on your phone.

1. Open the Android settings menu and select “Apps”.

2. Scroll to and tap the Google app in the list of apps.

3. On the Google App Information page, select Permissions.

Next, you’re going to turn off microphone access for the Google app so that it can’t passively listen to you through your phone.

4. In the app’s permission menu, select Microphone from the list.

5. On the microphone permissions screen, select the Deny radio button.

The Google app will no longer have access to your phone’s microphone. You can rest assured that Google will never be able to listen to you through this application.
