How to Take Screenshots on PS4.
The Sony PlayStation 4 is a huge step up from the previous generation, featuring a completely redesigned controller, updated hardware, and several internal enhancements to make the gaming experience a lot better. I really love that they included the ability to take screenshots and even record gameplay without the need for additional hardware and workarounds. While the ability to record gameplay and screen capture is intuitive, you still need to customize it to your liking. Let’s take a look at how to take screenshots on PS4.
PS4 does not allow screenshots (or even screen recordings) to be taken in certain situations, such as some game opening screens or cutscenes, which may be viewed as spoilers by developers.
Take screenshots on PS4
If you’ve never fiddled with your PS4’s screenshots settings, you can take screenshots using the SHARE button on your controller.
Turn on your PS4 (or PS4 Pro) and grab your controller. Then press and hold the SHARE button on your controller for at least 1 second to take a screenshot, as a normal press will simply open the sharing menu.
After you take screenshots, they will be saved in your PS4’s screenshots folder (called the Snapshot Gallery), which you can copy to a USB drive, share on social media, or send to other PS4 users.

Open the Post View menu
The SHARE menu contains a list of options to quickly save a screenshot or video. This menu comes in handy when you’ve just done something incredible in-game but forgot to take a screenshot or hit the record button to record a video. The PS4 shows you the most recently recorded video clip and the screenshot on the left. These screenshots are saved in the capture gallery only if you save them manually.
Press the SHARE button on your PS4 controller to open the menu on the left. You can press the triangle button (Δ) on your PS4 controller to save the screenshot, or the circle button (O) to return to the game.
Be aware, though, that depending on the game content or settings, you may not be able to take a screenshot. Some games want to preserve the plot and prevent spoilers. However, you can use a capture card to record all these games without any restrictions.
Change the control type of the SHARE button
By default, the PS4 takes a screenshot when you press the SHARE button for a long time, while a single press of the SHARE button opens the Share menu. However, if you are like me, it would be wiser to take a screenshot with a single tap on the SHARE button without disrupting your gameplay. Luckily, the PS4 has a setting (called Easy Screenshots) that lets you change the default SHARE function.
To change the SHARE button settings, go to the PS4 home page and select the settings icon.
Scroll down to Sharing & Streaming in the list of options and press X to open.
On the Sharing and Streaming page, you will see several options such as screenshot settings, broadcast settings, video clip length, SHARE button control type, etc. Open the SHARE button control type by pressing X on your PS4 controller.
Has two configurations; Standard and lightweight. The default mode takes a screenshot when pressed and held, and records a clip when you double-click the Share button. The display menu and the Screenshot shortcut can be swapped to make it easier to take screenshots.
Automatically capture a screenshot when you win a cup
And the SHARE button comes in handy if you want to capture moments of the game. PS4 can automatically take a screenshot every time you get a trophy in the game. Then you can share the screenshots on social media and brag to your friends.
To enable automatic screenshots, go to Sharing & Cast Settings, select Screenshot Settings from the list of options. Check the box and you’re done. All of your auto-captured screenshots will be saved in the capture gallery.

Link your PS4 account to your social media
You can directly share your achievements on social media by linking your PS4 account with your social media accounts. You can connect your Facebook, Twitch, Twitter and YouTube to share gameplay and screenshots.
To link your social networks, go to Sharing & Streaming Settings and select Link to Other Services. Select any of the icons to start customization.
PS4 will prompt you to enter your credentials to authorize PS4 publishing permissions. Enter the details and click the “Authorize Application” button.
Your social network is now linked to your PS4 account and you can post directly from the capture gallery. If you would like to unlink your account in the future, you can do so on the same settings page we used for the link.
Share a post on social media
To share your post on social media, go to the screenshot gallery and select a screenshot. Press and hold the SHARE button, select your social media account and tap Share.
Copy screen captures to a USB drive
You can copy screenshots taken on PS4 to USB stick. First, go to the snapshot gallery and press the options button on your PS4. It will show you a list of actions, select “copy to USB drive” on the right.
All of your files will be copied to the flash drive, and you can remove the drive and transfer the files to your computer or smartphone.
