How to update games from PS4 to PS5.
PlayStation 4 gamers have a lot to rejoice when it comes to the new PS5 console. It is not only a next-generation engine but also backward compatible with almost all PS4 games.
It’s not just the regular PS4 on offer. There are various options for updating PS4 games to PS5 so you can play them on your new console. We’ll go over all the possible improvements and how you can get them.
PS5 Backwards Compatibility in a Nutshell
Let’s take a quick look at the main details of PS5 backward compatibility. You can get a more detailed discussion in our PS5 Backward Compatibility Guide
The most important detail to know is that all but a very short list of PS4 games work on PS5. This is true whether you are using the game on disc or downloading it digitally. Games for PlayStation 3, 2, and 1 are now excluded. No one knows if Sony will ever add game support for these systems.
Inherent PS4 Game Upgrades
There is a type of game update inherent in simply launching the game on PS5 hardware. First of all, running PS4 games on PS5 fixes any performance issues that may have existed on PS4 or PS4 Pro. For example, in the days when there were too many games for PS4 hardware, which led to a drop in frame rates.
Modern games, including those of the later generations of PS4, often have unlocked frame rates and dynamic resolution scaling. Games like these benefit the most from PS5 hardware that simply scales to the maximum frame rate and maximum resolution the game supports and stays there.
Final Fantasy XV runs smoothly at 60fps when using “Lite” mode.
In some games, such as Final Fantasy XV, you need to select Unlocked Frame Rate mode in the game menus. So check to see if the game has any settings you need to tweak to allow the PS5 to stretch its legs a bit.
Game Boost Upgrades
The next free update you can get for your PS4 games is PS5 Game Boost. This is a PS5 feature that only works with a limited number of approved PS4 games. PS4 games must be approved for Game Boost. However, you don’t need to do anything other than keeping the system software up to date as the Game Boost list and settings are built into the system software.
When a PS4 game compatible with Game Boost is launched on your PS5, it will receive additional performance from the console.
Games With Free PS5 Versions
So far, we’ve only looked at passive PS4 updates, which don’t really require you to do anything other than keeping your system up to date and installing the appropriate PS4 game. However, some PS4 games also have PS5 versions.
These are two different games that will be delivered in different boxes in the store. However, some developers are offering a free update to anyone with a PS4 version. It’s entirely up to the developer whether they offer the PS5 version of their game as a free update or not. If you are going to buy a game for PS4 in the hope of getting a version for PS5, you will need to confirm the eligibility for the free update on a case-by-case basis.
Borderlands 3 is getting a free PS5 update with 4K support at 60fps!
At the time of writing, it has been confirmed that several games have free updates for the PS5. Some, like Borderlands 3 and Maneater, are ready to go. Others, like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, will be updated in the future. So, in the case of a game like Cyberpunk 2077, you can buy the PS4 version now without worry, and get the PS5 version for free as soon as it becomes available. Here is a list of known games with free updates, but this is not a complete list:
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
- Borderlands 3
- Control Ultimate Edition (other versions do not get free updates)
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Destiny 2
- DIRT 5
- DOOM Eternal
- Far Cry 6
- Maneater
- Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Nioh 2
- No Man’s Sky
- The Witcher 3 < / li>
- Yakuza: Like a Dragon (Digital Only)
Please note that some games, such as Yakuza, offer digital-only updates. Therefore, before purchasing, check if the game is suitable for updating the disc.
Upgrading Disc-base Games
Before you ask if you bought a PS5 Digital Edition that doesn’t have a disc drive, there simply isn’t an option to play or update disc games for PS4. If you have a diskless PS5, skip to the next section.
To update eligible PS4 disc games to PS5, you need to follow a few steps:
- First, make sure you are signed in to your account.
- Now insert the PS4 game disc into the PS5 drive.
- Now go to the game center of the game.
- An upgrade will be offered, either free or discounted.
- Choose Download or pay a discount and then download the game.
After activating the update and downloading the PS5 version of the game, the only catch is that the PS4 disc must be in the drive whenever you want to play the PS5 game.
Upgrading Digital Games
If you’re looking to update your PS4 digital game, it’s even less difficult. You don’t need to worry about losing access to the PS4 version of the game. We were able to run both versions of our PS4 and PS5 games at the same time on PS5. You also won’t lose access to your PS4 if you choose to keep yours. Here’s what to do:
Once you’ve downloaded the game, you can simply launch it from your game library and start playing. This is it! If you already had the PS4 version of the game installed on your system before downloading the PS5 version, you can uninstall it to save space.
The Pros and Cons of Upgrading To the PS5 Version of a Game
While updating a PS4 game to a PS5 version seems like a win-win, there are actually some drawbacks. To be clear, it’s okay to accept a level up offer. It’s just that PS5 games have certain limitations that PS4 games don’t.
First, PS5 games can only be played from the internal SSD. With only about 667 GB of available space and no way to back up games right now, this is a very limited resource. PS4 games can be played from any supported drive, including large external drives.
They don’t get as many benefits from the blazingly fast internal SSD technology as they do from regular gaming. If you want the fastest loading speed for PS4 games without using an internal SSD, we recommend using a USB SSD.
