Microsoft is announcing a new build of Windows 10 and everyone but you is updating their devices. When you check the Windows Update section in the Settings app, Windows tells you that your device is up to date. There is a newer version of Windows, of course, but you’re stuck with the old one. We explain why this happens and how you can force a Windows 10 update.

Microsoft is rolling out Windows 10 updates in trickles – not everyone gets updates at the same time. When Windows Update goes public, you can get it immediately, and sometimes it can take several days. However, if the delay is weeks or takes longer than usual, the troubleshooting methods in this guide will help you force the Windows 10 update to be installed on your device.

Do You Have the Latest Windows 10 Version?

Before trying to force an update, you need to first make sure your device is really out of date. Go to Settings> System> About, navigate to Windows Specifications and take note of your OS build and version.

How to update windows 10 manually

Now go to the official Windows 10 release page and compare your PC’s OS information with the latest Windows 10 and build number listed. If you don’t have the latest version, skip to the next section to learn how to manually run Windows update.

Force Window 10 to Update

There are several factors delaying the Windows 10 update. This could be due to insufficient storage space, major system processes crashing, and so on. If the problem is storage, the Windows Update agent will display an error informing you to free up additional storage space. … Other factors, on the other hand, are difficult to define.

We’ve put together a number of possible ways to force a Windows Update installation while fixing lag issues.

1. Restart the Windows Update Service

This service delivers software updates to Windows devices. Your computer may not download or install a new update automatically if the service is not working properly or is inactive. Restarting Windows Update Service may force Windows 10 to install the update. Follow the instructions below to do this.

1. Type “services” in the Windows search bar and select “Services” from the results.

2. Right-click Windows Update and select Restart.

Return to the Windows Updates section in the Settings app and check if a new update is available for your computer.

2. Restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service

The Windows Update Service relies on the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) to download updates from Microsoft servers. If BITS stops working, your computer may not be able to download and install updates. Restart the service and check if that solves the problem.

1. Enter services in the Windows search bar and select Services.

2. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service and select Restart.

If the service won’t start, try the other troubleshooting methods outlined in this guide to troubleshoot issues with the Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

3. Delete the Windows Update Folder

The Software Distribution folder contains the files required to install Windows on your computer. If you haven’t received a globally available update yet, deleting the contents of the folder might force Windows to get and install the latest OS build. Windows will automatically create a folder and re-download the files it needs to update your PC.

Before proceeding, there is something important to note. The Software Distribution folder also contains files containing your PC’s Windows update history. Thus, deleting the folder means that you cannot revert to a previous version of Windows.

Also, it may take longer than usual for your computer to update. This is because Windows Update must first repopulate the software distribution folder before installing any available updates.

To delete a software distribution folder or its contents, you must first stop the Windows Update Service and Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

1. Right-click the Start menu and select Command Prompt (Admin).

2. Paste the command below into the console and press Enter to stop the Windows Update service.

3. Paste the following command and press Enter. This will terminate the background intelligent transfer service.

clean stop bits

4. Launch File Explorer, go to Local Drive (C:)> Windows> Software Distribution and delete all items in the folder.

If you cannot delete files or receive an error message, restart your computer and try again. After deleting the files or software distribution folder, proceed to the next step to restart the background services that you stopped earlier.

5. Open a command prompt as administrator and paste the command below into the console to restart the Windows Update service.

clean start wuauserv

6. After that, paste the following command and press Enter to restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

Windows will automatically re-download the files it needs to update your computer to the latest OS build. Now check if the latest Windows build is available.

4. Perform Windows Update Cleanup

When you install new builds of Windows 10, Windows keeps the system files of the old updates on your device. This allows you to uninstall the update or roll back the operating system to a previous version. However, these system files often take up storage space and cause problems with future Windows updates.

Use the Disk Cleanup tool to clean up Windows Update and try installing the update again.

1. Enter “Disk Cleanup” in the Windows search bar and select “Disk Cleanup” as the result.

Wait for the tool to calculate how much free space you have on your computer. This may take a few seconds or minutes, depending on the size and configuration of your PC.

2. Click the Clean up system files button.

The Disk Cleanup tool will recalculate the free space on your local disk based on the system files this time.

3. Select the “Clean Windows Update” checkbox, uncheck other options and click “OK” to continue.

5. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

If you are still unable to install Windows Update after removing all associated files, try using the built-in troubleshooter to diagnose and fix issues that are delaying the update. Go to Settings> Update & Security> Troubleshoot> Windows Update and click the Run the troubleshooter button.

The Windows Update Troubleshooter will look for issues that are preventing the update from being installed on your computer.

When the diagnostics are complete, go to the Windows Update menu and check if you can now install the update. If nothing changes, restart your computer and try again.

6. Use the Windows Update Assistant

In addition to pushing an update, Windows Update Assistant can also perform a compatibility scan to make sure your computer meets the latest build of Windows 10 requirements.

Go to the Windows 10 download page in your browser and click the Update Now button to download the Windows Update Assistant installer.

Double-click the setup file to install and run Windows Update Assistant. Select “Update Now” to continue.

The tool will check if your device is compatible with the latest version of Windows 10. Select Next and the Update Assistant will download and install the update to your computer. This may take a while, depending on the size of the update, your internet speed, and other factors.

Sometimes, You Can’t Force Windows Updates

You may not be able to force Windows Update to run if Microsoft installs a safe delay on your computer. Protective hold is a technique used to temporarily prevent users from installing unstable or potentially harmful updates.

So how do you define defensive hold? Go to Settings> Update & Security> Windows Update. If your computer has a security lag, you will see the following error message on the page: “Windows 10 update is on the way. When it’s ready for your device, you will see the update available on this page. ”

Microsoft strongly discourages abandoning defensive hold, that is, manually installing an update if there are known update performance issues. Wait until update issues are resolved or security measures are removed.
