iMovie is a free, easy-to-use video editing application that can be used with any Apple product When using iMovie on iPad, it has a simple and minimalistic interface. This makes it the perfect choice for simple video or photo editing The program has tons of editing options if you just need to do something quickly and easily.

It’s also a better option than more professional editing software if you don’t want to add complex effects or changes as it is completely free to use. Plus, unlike many free editing software, iMovie doesn’t watermark the finished project.

However, despite the ease of use of iMovie, there are many things you might be missing out on that can dramatically improve the quality of your final product. Whether you just want to cut multiple clips together or do something a little more complex, knowing all the intricacies of the app will make using iMovie on iPad much easier.

Start a project

When you first open iMovie on iPad, you should see a gray box with a plus sign labeled New Project. By clicking on this, you can choose if you want to shoot a movie or a trailer.

The Movie option is better for total control over the project, but if you want to follow a pattern, you can choose Trailer.

Once you select Movie, you will be taken to a screen where you can choose which media you want to add to your project. You can choose from your photos, videos, or other albums on iPad.

When you click on a media file, click on the checkmark to add it to your project. Once you’ve added all the media you need, click on “Create Movie” on the bottom screen. This will take you to the main editing screen.

Ways to Edit Your Project

To start editing media in your project, simply click on a clip in the timeline (bottom half of the screen). Some tools will appear and the clip you have selected will be highlighted in yellow. There are five different sections with many options in each.

Below the scissors icon, you can select Divide to cut the clip where the cursor is. You can also separate the audio from the clip by choosing Mute. Finally, you can copy the entire selected clip by clicking Duplicate.

When you click on it, a yellow bar appears in the timeline in the selected clip. You can move this bar at each end of the clip to choose which part you want the speed to be for. You can slow down or speed up a selected portion of a clip by moving the white circle in the line below the clip. The right side of the rabbit is to speed it up, and the side of the turtle is to slow it down.

You can also freeze the frame where the cursor is located by clicking Freeze Frame.

Using the scroll bar below the timeline, you can make the sound in the selected clip higher or lower.

Headings

This option has many different pre-made titles and title animations that you can add to your video. You can also center the text or lower it to the left corner of the video by clicking Center or Below below the text options.

Filters

If you choose to add any of these filters, they will change the look of the selected video. You don’t have much freedom to change the look of your filters, but if you like how any of them look in your project, this is an easy way to style it.

Besides these tools, you also have some other options for editing your project in iMovie that you might not notice at first.

On the left side of the screen, you should see the microphone and camera icons. By clicking on the microphone, you can record audio from your iPad and it will be added to your project. You can do the same with a video by clicking the camera icon.

Cancel

There is a U-shaped arrow icon on the right side of the screen, clicking on it will undo the last action you did in iMovie.

Next to the Undo button is a waveform icon that lets you see any sound in your project. This will allow you to see what you are doing if you change the volume or want to cut parts of the audio

There is a gear icon at the top right that you can click to open additional settings for your project. At the top, you can add filters that will apply to your entire project, not just the selected clip.

Below are the themes you can add, namely some animations and graphics that will be automatically added to your project. A toggle switch directly below the themes allows you to turn the theme soundtrack on and off, which is the music and sounds already added to a specific theme.

You can also choose whether the project will fade in or out to black, and at the bottom, you can choose whether changing the video speed will affect the pitch of the video.

Completion of your project

When you’re done editing and you’re happy with what you’ve done, you can click “Done” in the upper left corner of the screen to finish.

On this screen, you can preview your project and rename it as you like by clicking on the previously created name “My Movie”. If you decide to go back to editing, you can click Edit.

At the bottom of the screen, you can click on the first icon with the play button to view your project in full screen. The icon with a box and an upward-facing arrow is the Export button that lets you share, export, or save the video to iPad.

If you decide to completely delete the video, you can click on the trash can to do so.
