Between phone calls and text messages, you might think you have enough ways to communicate almost instantly. However, the Walkie Talkie app on Apple Watch makes it easier to talk to someone if you’re in a noisy or crowded place or can’t type.

The app is reminiscent of the walkie-talkies we had as kids, or the walkie-talkies that law enforcement use today. Hold the button to speak the message and release the button to listen. Here’s how to use your Apple Watch walkie-talkie to quickly and easily communicate with friends and family.

Walkie-Talkie Requirements

You and other Apple Watch users only need a few things to use the app.

Apple Watch Series 1 or later running watchOS 5.3 or laterFaceTime is set up and turned on when iPhone is running. iOS 12.4 or later you live in a country or region where the walkie-talkie is available

The Walkie-Talkie app for Apple Watch uses cellular or Wi-Fi.

Download and Install Walkie-Talkie

If your Apple Watch is running watchOS 5.3 or later, you should have the Walkie-Talkie app installed by default. This is one of the new features introduced in watchOS 5.

If you’ve deleted the app from your watch and want to get it back, you can download it again.

Open the App Store on your Apple Watch. Use the search box at the top to type or say “Walkie Talkie”.Tap Get or the cloud icon to download and install the app for free.

Please note that the Apple Walkie-Talkie app is only available for Apple Watch. While you may see it when you search the App Store on your iPhone, you can only download it from the App Store on your Apple Watch.

Send a Walkie-Talkie Invitation

To start chatting with a friend for the first time using Walkie-Talkie, you need to send them an invitation. To do this, simply add your friend to the application.

Open the Walkie Talkie app on your watch. Select “Add Friends”.Select the friend you want to add from your contact list.

When you choose a friend, you immediately send him an invitation. The contact card is dimmed in the Walkie-Talkie app until it accepts a call.

If your friend doesn’t have an app or a supported device, you should see an alert on your Apple Watch informing you.

Once your contact accepts the invitation, their card will turn yellow.

Accept a Walkie-Talkie Invitation

If you receive an invitation from a friend, you will see it in the Walkie-Talkie app and Notification Center. Select “Always allow” to accept the invitation.

Delete friend

If you want to remove a friend from the Walkie Talkie app, you can do so on your Apple Watch or iPhone.

On your Apple Watch, open the Walkie Talkie app. Swipe left on a friend’s name or number and press X.

On iPhone, open the Watch app and then:

Select Walkie Talkie from the My Watch tab. Select Edit at the top and select the minus sign next to a friend’s name or number. Tap Delete and then Done.

You will not be prompted to confirm the removal of the friend from the walkie-talkie.

Turn Walkie-Talkie On or Off

You can turn the Walkie Talkie app on or off in the app itself or in Control Center on your Apple Watch.

In the app, use the Walkie Talkie switch at the top to turn it on (green) or off (gray). In the Control Center, tap the radio icon to turn it on (yellow) or off (gray).

You will see an indicator when the radio is turned on. The yellow app icon briefly appears at the top of the watch face, as well as at the top of the Control Center.

Note. When you turn on Theater mode on your Apple Watch, you’re automatically marked as unavailable for conversation using the Walkie Talkie app. Do Not Disturb mode reflects your iPhone settings.

Adjust the App Notifications

While you’ll probably want to “always allow” notifications for the Apple Watch Walkie-Talkie app, there may be times when you’ll want to turn them off or send them to your Notification Center instead.

To change notifications, open the Watch app on iPhone and go to the My Watch tab. Then do one of the following:

Select Walkie Talkie and change notifications. Select Notifications, select Walkie Talkie, and change notifications.

You can start a real-time conversation in the Walkie-Talkie app by selecting your contact. Remember that their contact card must be yellow. If a friend starts a conversation with you, the conversation works the same way.

Open Walkie-Talkie, then press and hold the big yellow talk button to start talking. Release the button when finished. Your buddy will hear your message immediately.

If your friend’s app is disabled or unavailable, you’ll see a notification.

Turn the Digital Crown to adjust the talk volume.

If you’d rather press to speak than press and hold, you can change this in your Apple Watch settings.

On your Apple Watch, open Settings and select Accessibility. In the Walkie Talkie section, turn on the “Press to talk” switch.
