While Windows 10 isn’t the most powerful on the market today, it has its own hidden video editor that gets the job done. This is a feature of the Photos app and what’s left of the Story Remix app that was released on Windows 10 back in 2017.
Windows 10 Video Editor works like Windows Movie Maker. You can create your own home movies and slideshows, or edit already created ones manually or automatically.
So if you can’t get your hands on a more powerful editor due to time, cost, or any other reason, Windows 10 Video Editor should work as a last resort. Since you most likely do not know where it is, we would like to give you a short tour.
How to use Windows 10 Video Editor
You don’t need to download anything as Windows 10 Video Editor is already included with all Windows 10 computers. The editor can perform basic editing operations and has a fairly easy-to-use interface. If you want to check it out, you can follow the steps in this article.
Edit & Create
- Open a video file by right-clicking it and choosing Open With> Photos.
- This will cause the video to start playing in the Photos app.
- Click the Edit & New drop-down menu to start editing.
- It will contain various editing tools that you can start using right away.
- You can use Trim to split the video into sections. To do this, drag the markers on the playhead to the start and end times of the scene you want to save. A blue pin will allow you to see what is happening in a particular scene. Then click the Play button to see the scene in motion.
- Add Time Lapse lets you apply slower speed to your video.
- Save Photos allows you to take a snapshot of a frame in the video for saving.
- To draw attention to any part of the scene, you can develop your artistic skills and draw directly on the video using the Paint tool. It provides a variety of stroke options such as ballpoint pen, pencil, calligraphic pen, eraser, all in an assortment of colors.
Make additions to your video project
Adding text, animated text, 3D effects or music to your video project will really make it stand out. To do this, use the tools “Create Video with Text” and “Add 3D Effects”.
- To start your own video project, start the Photos app, click More, and select Video Projects.
- Click on the blue New Video Project option and give it a name.
- Then you can start adding photos and videos to your project by clicking the + Add button.
- To start a project, you need to add at least one video or photo. You can combine them together, choose one or the other, or create a slideshow from photos. Your choice.
- Anything you add will appear in the project library. You can drag and drop items from the Project Library to the storyboard to add them.
- After adding a video, some editing tools will appear in the storyboard panel.
- In addition to the Crop tool, you can resize the video (remove black bars from different aspect ratios), add visual filters (sepia, pixels, etc.), insert text, apply motion effects (various camera styles) and insert 3D effects (falling snow, rain, lightning, explosions, etc.)
- Dragging everything at once into the storyboard means everything will be edited together. To focus on a single video or image, add only that video or image to the storyboard, make the necessary changes, and then export it to a new file.
- To add this single file back to the project, to continue with other photos and videos you can simply + add them back to the project library.
- For longer projects, you can avoid customization and use themes instead.
- It can be found on the top bar of the window and select a theme that contains filters, music, and text styles that work well together. Before making the final decision, you will be presented with a preview video of how everything will look.
- You can add multiple tunes to your project by clicking the Background Music button.
- There are several music options already loaded into the Photos app to choose from. For your own music recordings, you will need to select Custom Audio.
- To adjust the orientation of your video, there is an Aspect Ratio button on the toolbar.
- This will allow you to switch your video between landscape (16: 9, 4: 3) and portrait (9:16, 3: 4).
- When you are happy with the project and have added the latest improvements, click “Done Video” in the upper right corner of the window.
- Add to Cloud used to be an option if you preferred to keep all projects in the Microsoft cloud. However, from 2020 this option has been removed. Instead, you can only choose what video quality you want the video to be saved in and whether you want to use accelerated encoding.
- Video projects appear in the Photos app under Video Projects. When you export to your computer, the Photos application will tell you where they were saved.
