There is a new way of doing things on the Internet, and behind it is the top level domain (TLD) .new. Google is the registrar for the .new domain. You may have already seen its use in various Google applications.
Who gets a new domain?
Anyone can register a .new domain, but there are conditions unique to the TLD world.
- To register a .new domain, it must be used to trigger an action in a process or create content.
- It should immediately engage the user in creative action.
- It must be publicly available within 100 days from the date of domain registration.
- Google must have permission to validate the domain for free for Google. This means that if this is a membership process, then Google does not need to pay for membership just to test it.
Some of the biggest names on the Internet have already bought up their domains and are starting to use them.
Canva
If you are not using Canva for online graphics and printing, you should try them. To make it easier to create new designs, Canva has acquired the canva.new and design.new .domains. Both lead straight to Canva‘s online graphic design tool.
Spotify
Spotify is all about music and podcasts, which is why it has taken over the playlist.new and podcast.new domains. As you might have guessed, playlist.new will initiate a new playlist for you.

So what’s new?
There are many more .new domains to come. This is just the beginning, as in October Google opened .new domain registrations to only well-known brands.
Limited registration will be available in December 2019. Then, in July 2020, anyone can register without submitting an application. However, they will still need to meet the registration criteria.
Is the new one worth it?
This is too new to tell. At $ 550 per domain, it’s well worth it for big names, but might not be the case for a lone website owner. New domains seem to be just being used as redirects to existing and fairly easy-to-access functions right now.
Until 2020, when truly creative people can access a domain, we just don’t know what can be done with it.
