The Use of AirPlay on Roku.
In addition to the built-in streaming features on your Roku, you can stream a variety of media files from your Apple device to the Roku using Apple AirPlay technology.
If your Roku device is AirPlay compatible, you can stream music, photos, and videos from your iPhone, iPad, and Mac to your Roku-enabled screen. To do this, you need to first set up AirPlay on your Roku.

Step 1: Check the Device Compatibility With AirPlay
To stream media from your Apple devices to your Roku and your Roku, and your Apple device must support AirPlay 2.
To check if your Roku supports Apple AirPlay, first find your Roku model number and software version as follows:
- Go to Settings> System> About on your Roku.
- Please note the software model and version on the About screen.
Now compare the model number of your Roku with the following AirPlay-enabled devices. Also, if your Roku model is one of the following, it must be running Roku OS 9.4 or later.
- 1 – Roku TV: Axxxx, Cxxxx, CxxGB, 7xxxx
- 2 – Roku Streambar: 9102
- 3 – Roku Streambar Pro: 9101R2
- 4 – Roku Premiere: 4630, 4620, 3920
- 5 – Roku Premiere +: 3921, 4630
- 6 – Roku Streaming Stick +: 3811, 3810
- 7 – Roku Smart Soundbar: 9100, 9101
- 8 – Roku Express 4K: 3940
- 9 – Roku Express 4K +: 3941
- 10 – Roku Ultra: 4600, 4640, 4660, 4661, 4670, 4800
- 11 – Roku Ultra LT: 4662
If your Roku model is on the following list, then your model supports AirPlay, but must be running Roku OS 10.0 or later.
- 1 – Roku TV: Dxxxx, 8xxxx
- 2 – Roku Streaming Stick: 3600, 3800, 3801
- 3 – Roku Express: 3900, 3930, 3801
- 4 – Roku Express +: 3910, 3931
- 5 – Roku HD: 3932
- 6 – Roku 2: 4205, 4210
- 7 – Roku 3: 4200, 4201, 4230
To use AirPlay on Apple devices, your iPhone and iPad must have iOS 11.4 or later. On your Mac, you must be using macOS Mojave 10.14.5 or newer.
Also, your Roku device and Apple device must be on the same Wi-Fi network. If they are on different networks, AirPlay will not work.
Step 2: Enable AirPlay on Roku
Your Roku device has a dedicated AirPlay settings menu where you need to enable the AirPlay option before you can use this feature.
- Select Settings> Apple AirPlay and HomeKit from the main interface of your Roku.
- Turn on the AirPlay option on the AirPlay and HomeKit settings screen.
Step 3: Use AirPlay on Your Roku Device
Now that AirPlay is enabled on your Roku, you’re ready to start streaming content from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the Roku.
When it comes to streaming content, you have two options. You can stream audio, video, or photo files from your Apple device to your Roku, or you can mirror the entire screen of your Apple device to your Roku.
We’ll show you how to use both options.
Stream Content From an Apple Device to Roku
You can stream a variety of media files including music, photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad or Mac to Roku using AirPlay using both built-in apps and third-party apps that support AirPlay.
Stream media from iPhone / iPad to Roku
As an example, we will stream a music track from Spotify to iPhone to Roku:
- Launch the Spotify app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Find the song you want I want to stream to your Roku and play that song.
- Tap the Listen icon at the bottom of the Now Playing screen.

Select AirPlay or Bluetooth from the Listening screen.
- Select a Roku device from the device list.
- You will see the AirPlay passcode on the screen connected to the Roku. Enter this password on your Apple device and click OK.
- Your music should start playing on your Roku.
Stream media from Mac to Roku
You can transfer media files from Mac to Roku. For example, to stream YouTube videos from Safari to Mac to Roku:
- Launch Safari on your Mac and access any YouTube video.
- Select the AirPlay icon at the bottom of the video and select your Roku device from the list.
- The AirPlay password will appear on your Roku. Enter this code in the request on your Mac and click OK.
- Your video should play on your Roku device.
Mirror an Apple Device’s Screen to Roku
Viewing iPhone, iPad or Mac content on Roku using device screen mirroring works in much the same way as streaming media content.
Mirroring iPhone or iPad Screen to Roku
Your iPhone and iPad have built-in mirroring functionality, so you don’t need to install a third-party screen mirroring app.
- Open Control Center on your iPhone or iPad. On recent devices, this can be done by swiping down from the top right corner. On older devices, swipe up from the bottom.
- Click Screen Mirroring.
- Select a Roku device from the device list.
- An AirPlay passcode should appear on your Roku. Enter this code on your iPhone or iPad and click OK.
- You will see the screen of your Apple device on your Roku.
- To stop mirroring your iPhone or iPad screen, click Stop Mirroring on your device.
Mirror Mac Screen to Roku
The Mac also has a built-in mirroring feature so you don’t need a third-party app.
- Click the Control Center icon in the Mac menu bar and choose Screen Mirroring.
- Select your Roku device from the list.
- Make a note of your Roku password and enter it at the command line on your Mac. Select “OK”.
- Roku will display the entire Mac screen.
- To stop mirroring your Mac screen, click the mirroring icon in the Mac menu bar and select your Roku device.
This is how you enjoy your Apple device content on the big screen of your Roku.
