This Free AI Tool Removes Background From Videos But Has A Catch.
Unscreen is a new free online tool that automatically removes backgrounds from your videos. It was created by the same command that created the all too popular remove.bg file. We at TechWiser use remove.bg every now and then to save time when thumbnailing videos.
This free AI tool removes this background from videos
Like remove.bg, Unscreen works well and is great for removing the edges of individual objects. Powered by the same Kaleido AI background removal tool. You can choose one of your videos or search for videos in Giphy. After processing, you also end up with a bunch of solid color backgrounds and images that you can attach to your video.
For now, the only downside to Unscreen is the video limitation and watermark. The tool can only handle 5 second videos. Even if you provide it with a larger video, it will only process the first 5 seconds. Moreover, it can only output in GIF or PNG format (for images), which is again a big disappointment. However, the site promises to provide an Unscreen Pro subscription model that will fix all of these issues. Now you can subscribe to keep abreast of the news.
We tried several videos on the site to test AI-based background removal. We started with the popular Shia LaBeouf video with a green screen. As you might expect, it did a pretty good job with a solid colored background. The edges were slightly cropped and a black spot appeared at the beginning. It is very similar to any other green screen removal tool.
We then increased the difficulty a bit and tried one of our TW videos with a complex background. Due to the less body moment, the edge detection on Kaushal was quite excellent. The part of the 3D printer that was in focus became part of the foreground. This can be easily masked in Final Cut Pro.
Of course, AI seems to be working on detecting foreground and background depending on what’s in focus and what’s not. So, I tried it again on a video with a flat background and a big head moment. The result is amazing. The engine was able to quickly detect a moving object and then determine its edges. It still didn’t cut perfectly, but it worked well nonetheless.
Now, to give the tool a bit of a tricky job, I tried a short GIF of my roommate’s cat. The job was bad, but I wouldn’t mind posting a fancy background and sharing it on Instagram.
At the moment, it’s not worth writing miracles about this tool. The only thing I find is creating funny gifs and posting them to Instagram. However, like any artificial intelligence tool, the engine learns over time. It still has some distance to travel to reach the height of remove.bg. It’s really amazing to see AI boil down to simple consumer tools like image deletion, video editor, etc. Another fun GitHub project I saw last week removed people from a live webcam stream.
