When you need to translate text you speak, type or hear, your iPhone has a handy app to do it. Although the Apple Translate app was introduced with the release of iOS 14, improvements have been made since then to make the app more flexible and reliable.

Translate App Basics

The Translator app looks the same on iPhone and iPad, with a neat and clean interface.

For a simple translation, select the “Translate” tab and select “from” and “to” languages ​​at the top. You can choose from a dozen different languages, including English, French, Spanish, German, Italian and Chinese. Then enter some text in the box.

If you prefer to speak text, tap the microphone icon and say the words you want to translate.

You will immediately see the translated text, whether you type it or speak it out loud, right below it in your chosen language.

Use the Conversation Mode

If you want to use the Translator app to translate in real time when you are talking to another person, this app will help you.

Select the “Talk” tab to enter the talk mode.Press the microphone button to speak. The screen will display your words along with the words in the translated language directly below it.To also listen to the translation aloud, tap the three dots in the lower right corner and select Play Translations to check the box next to the feature. From now on, you will not only see the translated text, but also hear it in the translated language.

Choose the right look

In conversation mode, you can choose the view you want to use based on the position of you and your participant.

While in the Conversation tab, tap the Side by Side icon in the bottom left corner. Select “Face to Face” to change the view. This switches the screen so that your words appear at the bottom and your participant’s words appear at the top, facing the other way. As the name suggests, this mode is perfect for face-to-face conversations.To return to side-by-side viewing, tap the X in the top right corner. This view works best if you are sitting next to your participant. The conversation is displayed as a text message screen using message pop-ups.

Enable auto-translate

The automatic translation feature is another handy tool when using conversation mode.

With it, you do not need to constantly click on the microphone icon during a call. Instead, the app picks up conversation pauses and alternating voices. It will then automatically activate to capture the conversation as needed.

During a call, tap the three dots on the bottom right. Select Auto-Translate to check the box next to it and activate it.

To turn it off at any time, follow the same steps to uncheck “Auto-translate”.

Enable Language Detection

If you are traveling or talking to someone and want the app to automatically detect the language, you can do it with just two taps.

In conversation mode (on the “Conversation” tab), click on the three dots in the lower right corner and select “Detect language”.

Clear Conversation

If you plan to continue on your way and start a new conversation with someone else, you can clear your current one.

Click on the three dots in the lower right corner of the Conversation tab.Select “Clear Conversation”.Confirm by clicking on “Clear”.

Open Full Screen Mode

Maybe you are talking to someone and want to show someone else the translated text. For example, you can use the Translate app to ask for directions and show your friend the translated text.

On the Conversation or Translation tab, tap the translated text. Select the double-sided arrow.

You will then see the text in full screen and landscape mode, making it easy to show your friend.While in this mode, press the play button to hear the translated text aloud, and the message icon to exit and return to the previous screen.< /li>

Add to Your Favorites

If you find yourself translating the same text often, you can save it to your Favorites. This will allow you to access your favorites instead of translating the same text over and over again.

On the Conversation or Translation tab, tap the star icon below the translated text. To view a previous translation, scroll up, tap the translated text, and select a star.

To view your saved translations, go to the “Favorites” tab at the bottom. Note that you can also view recent translations under saved ones.

To remove favorites, tap the translated text and uncheck the star.

Look Up Translated Words

A bonus feature of the Translator app allows you to search for words in the Translation tab. With the in-app dictionary, you can see the pronunciation, definition, and part of speech in both your language and the target language.

Select the translated text and then tap the dictionary icon to look up the first word, or tap a specific translated word in a phrase or sentence.

The dictionary will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. Slide it up to open a larger image and press X to close it when you’re done.

Download Languages for Offline Translations

If you plan to use the Translator app in a location where you may not be connected to the Internet, you can download languages ​​in advance for offline use.

Open the Settings app and select Translate.Select downloaded languages.Tap the download arrow to the right of the language you want to use offline. You’ll see a progress bar similar to the app’s download from the App Store.

When done, that language will appear at the top of the “Available offline” section.
