When watching movies on a computer, it always annoys me that some scenes are very loud, and in some I can barely hear what is happening. I understand that they try to make it as realistic as possible, but it really annoys me if you can’t turn on the speakers fully or can’t use headphones.
This is especially true at night or in a public place, where I am listening to something on my laptop and suddenly there is really loud dance music or loud fighting scenes.
What do I usually do? Well, I manually turn down the volume until the loud scenes stop and then turn up the volume again.
I was very disappointed with this for a long time until I found a cool program called Sound Lock that works for Windows and limits the sound level on your computer!
In fact, this is a really simple program. You simply tell him the maximum sound level you want and he will make sure the volume never goes over it.
But you’re probably thinking, “Well, can’t you just turn down the volume on my computer to 50% and it’ll be the same?” No! So the program doesn’t just turn down the volume. It plays quieter scenes at normal volume, and then lowers the volume if something gets really loud.
This is exactly what I wanted because I could hear the dialogue clearly, but whenever a loud scene started, it kept the volume at a lower level, which I also set.
How to use Voice Lock
After installing the software, it will appear in the taskbar, and if you click on it, you will see the following volume control:
You need to press the “On” button and then just adjust the slider to the desired maximum sound level. The default is the maximum level.
I suggest playing a movie or video, moving to a loud scene, and then turning the volume down to what sounds best. Then just leave it there and watch the rest of the video.
You will notice that until you drag the slider under the yellow bars, the volume does not actually decrease! That’s what’s so cool about this program. Another way to do this is to replay a regular scene with dialogue, for example, and then just drag the slider just above the stripes.
The program works like magic! You can still hear everything perfectly in loud scenes, but instead of blowing your ears, you just hear it at the same level as everything else.
It does a great job with smooth sound overall. There are no big dips, jumps or anything like that in the sound.
Another cool thing is that you can adjust the volume per channel, up to 14 different channels. If you click the settings button in the upper right corner, you will see all channels and select your audio device.
As a side note: if you download it in IE, you may get a message that this program usually won’t load, may harm your computer, etc., etc.
I tested the software on VirusTotal and it came up 100% negative for viruses, malware or spyware, so you have nothing to worry about. This is a little known program, so you get the message in IE.
I use this program almost all the time, even when I watch YouTube videos, home videos, songs from my music library, or whatever. It does a great job with sound and makes everything much quieter!
