What Are Google Maps Plus Codes?

Any point on Earth can be determined using latitude and longitude coordinates. However, this long string of numbers is not always the most convenient way to find a place. With this in mind, Google's engineering department in Zurich released an open source location code, known as the "plus code", in 2014.

A plus code is a shortened version of traditional location coordinates. In a grid system, a plus code is created by magnifying that specific spot on the grid. Using a combination of consecutive labels for rows and columns and alphanumeric characters, you get a plus code like this: 4RXV+29 Las Vegas, Nevada.

The purpose of plus codes is to give each location, no matter how remote, a recognizable "address". This way, those places where there are no street names or exact addresses can still be detected with high accuracy for things like delivery, emergency services, and social services.
