Reddit is a community of communities with subreddits that you wouldn’t even believe existed, that cater to all needs, wants and interests. Although most of these communities are moderated, you can communicate your views with comments and other feedback to help guide the post, with the best comments being the most visible.
One of the best feedback forms is Reddit karma, which helps promote comments and posts, and helps users gain recognition. What is Reddit Karma? As you’ll see in this guide, Reddit Karma is your reputation based on your input. Here’s everything you need to know.

What is Reddit Karma?
When you publish a new post or comment on Reddit, users will be able to promote or hide it by voting for or against the content. Every Reddit thread or comment starts with one point – this is the total karma assigned to that post.
If other Reddit users don’t like it, they can vote against it by reducing their Karma Points to negative numbers below zero. However, if other Reddit users liked a post or comment, they can vote on it, which will make it more public. If a post goes viral with enough karma attached, it could potentially even send it to the main Reddit page.

This is the power of Reddit in action. Karma is the sum of points earned for comments and posts on Reddit in different subreddits. It’s your reputation, allowing other Reddit users to see if you have a good reputation on the platform, or if you’re a bad member, a brand new user, or a complete scammer.
If you are popular, your karma on Reddit will be high, but one or two risky posts can lower your karma rating. You can’t earn karma just by posting or commenting, but if you write useful, interesting, or meaningful posts on popular subreddits, you will soon be rewarded for your contributions from other users.
Is Reddit Karma necessary?
The Karma of Reddit is not strictly necessary, but it helps to weed out low-quality content and users from subreddits. For example, if you’ve ever been banned from Reddit, it will likely be associated with a number of offensive or obnoxious posts – posts that would have been rejected by other users for the same reason.
Some subreddits also use the karma system to automatically check posts and comments. If you have a new account, you will not have many karma points. Some subreddits will prevent you from posting new posts or comments unless you get that score somewhere else with regular Reddit posts.

If you want to get far on Reddit, you should pay attention to your Reddit karma, at least from time to time. Low karma in old accounts will mean that the subreddit moderators are making judgments about your intentions – accurate or not.
Reddit is a platform for everyone, so even if you don’t care about Reddit‘s karma and don’t worry about keeping track of your karma score, you may still be forced to deal with the consequences if your score gets too low.
How to get Karma on Reddit
The Karma of Reddit is entirely dependent on the goodwill of other users. If your comments and posts are well received, other users can vote for you. Votes for other users add a point to your overall karma, which you can view on your profile.

You cannot fake your amount, and most Reddit users will be able to detect attempts to create goodwill (and therefore karma) through fake or spam messages. The best way to increase your karma rating on Reddit is to be sincere and open to the community you participate in.
Some subreddits are known to have a mostly negative user base, so be careful about your contributions. Posting controversial or negative posts will generate a response that is often accompanied by negative votes and a decrease in your karma.
View your Reddit Karma Points
If you want to keep track of your Reddit karma account, there are several ways to do it. A quick glance at the top right corner of the Reddit window (after logging in) will allow you to see your current Reddit Karma account as shared.

You can also see your Reddit Karma rating on your Reddit user profile. You can access it directly from your custom url (e.g. reddit.com/u/user). Alternatively, you can access your profile after logging in by selecting your Reddit username in the top right corner and then selecting the ‘My Profile’ option.

Reddit karma score was previously split into post karma and comment karma in the old Reddit interface. However, in the new Reddit interface, you will simply see the karma of your posts and comments combined into one overall score.
If you’re interested in seeing split ratings, you’ll need to go back to the old Reddit interface. To do this, visit old.reddit.com/user/username, replacing the username with your Reddit username. Alternatively, select your username in the upper-right corner of the new Reddit interface, and then select the “Visit Old Reddit” option.

How to vote affirmative and vote negative on Reddit
If you want to give karma to users who post or comment on Reddit, you can do so using a voting system for. There are up and down arrows next to every post and comment on Reddit
If you choose the up arrow, you will vote for this comment if you are logged in yourself. For new Reddit posts, this means the original poster gets an extra Karma point. This may not update immediately, however, as Reddit uses vote fuzzing to disguise rating updates to protect the system from manipulation.

If you choose to vote for a comment, the commentator will receive that vote (and, as a result, a karma point). Likewise, if you decide to vote against a post or comment, one point will be deducted from that user’s total karma.
This ensures that the balance of power remains in the community. If you and other Reddit users notice a low-quality comment or post, you can vote against it. As soon as a comment or post is voted below zero, it will be hidden from view.
Build your reputation on Reddit
Once you start building your Reddit karma, you will be well on your way to becoming a professional Reddit user and participating in the thousands of subreddits available for you to view and post. If you can’t find the subreddit you’re looking for, try using Reddit‘s advanced search features to help you find your way.
If you want to take it a step further, you can sign up for Reddit Premium (formerly Reddit Gold) and give away a super kart with gold, silver and platinum rewards. Don’t worry if you lose interest because you can delete your Reddit account at any time, but be prepared to lose your karma if this happens.
