Longtime Minecraft players are familiar with the different types of building blocks in Minecraft: wood, stone, sand, iron, and more. Update 1.17 added a new type of material: copper. Copper cannot be used to make tools such as axes or swords, but it adds many new possibilities, both in terms of utility and aesthetics.

Copper is also the first block to take advantage of the new weatherproof element. While use is still limited, this new block has a lot of exciting potential and Mojang is likely to expand its copper use as the game develops.

Where to Find Copper In Minecraft

Copper is not a very rare resource in Minecraft. It is more common than iron and can be produced anywhere in the Upper World, but can usually be found between Y-47 and Y-48. In the Java version of Minecraft, copper ore tends to appear about six times per chunk in veins from zero to 16 blocks.

Copper blocks can replace other blocks during generation. If a copper vein appears in deep shale, it becomes a deep shale copper block. Despite the different names, deep copper and regular copper are functionally the same.

When mined, a Copper Block will drop two to three pieces of Raw Copper. If you mine a pickaxe enchanted by Fortune, each block can drop up to 12 pieces of raw copper.

Raw copper must be melted just like any other piece of raw ore, in a furnace or blast furnace. One piece of raw copper makes one ingot.

The following three main items can be crafted from Copper:

  1. Spyglass
  2. Lightning Rod
  3. Copper Block

The new items have different functions:

  • With Spyglass, you can zoom in wherever you can see within your field of vision, which can be very useful when looking for a Nether Fortress or village. Please note that it does not disperse fog. If you’re looking for something right at the edge of your field of view, a spyglass won’t help you see blurry objects.
  • A lightning rod conducts lightning to one place within a specified radius. It also emits a redstone signal, so if you want to create a lightning-based machine, the Lightning Rod is the best choice. Its effective range is 128 blocks in the Java version or 64 x 64 x 64 blocks in the Bedrock version.
  • The copper block is a decorative element that you can place to build structures. It is unique in that it oxidizes over time. After exposure to the elements, it will gradually take on a greenish tint until it is completely green. You can use beeswax paper over the copper to prevent oxidation.

You can also place four blocks of copper in a 2 x 2 grid on a workbench to create a copper cut. This is another decorative block and will also oxidize over time at the same rate as the copper block.

How to create a spyglass

Crafting a telescope requires a workbench, one amethyst shard, and two copper ingots.

Place two copper ingots in the lower middle and middle sections of the 3 x 3 workbench and the amethyst shard in the top center.

How to create a lightning rod

To create a lightning rod, you need a workbench and three copper ingots.

In the middle of the 3 × 3 crafting grid, place the copper ingots in a row from top to bottom.

Lightning rods can be placed on top of objects, under objects and to the side of blocks.

How to create a copper block

To create a copper block, you will need a workbench and nine copper ingots.

Fill the crafting grid with ingots. You can craft more than one copper block at a time if you have enough ingots.

If you want to use copper blocks for their decorative elements, be aware that it takes 50 to 82 game days for copper to fully oxidize. Once the block has oxidized, you can return it to its normal state by using an ax to “clean” it.

Copper-Related Achievements

If you enjoy pursuing achievements in games, Minecraft added one copper-related achievement in a recent update. This is called Wax On, Wax Off. The wording is a little confusing: it says you need to apply wax and remove it from all copper blocks.

This achievement means that you need to wax the copper block and remove it at each oxidation stage. There are four stages in the game:

  • Copper Block
  • Exposed Copper
  • Weathered Copper
  • Oxidized CopperHow to Use Copper in MinecraftBlocks of copper left for oxidation will slowly move from one to the other over time. If you’re looking for an achievement, craft three copper blocks. Put them on the ground outside, apply wax on the first one and remove it. After that, the blocks will continue to oxidize. Pay attention to each one and use wax at every step. You will need three blocks because when you remove the wax from one it will reset it to its original state and you will have to start from scratch. There is no other use of copper in the game at this time; however, many players are asking Minecraft and Mojang to add brass tools to the game as another option besides wood, stone, iron and diamond. This will happen? It’s unclear, but given that there are many updates planned for Minecraft, it’s worth keeping an eye on the patch notes.
