If you want a tablet for your kids with which it will be very easy for them to enjoy kid-friendly content on Netflix, Amazon Video, kids sites, etc. And the Amazon Fire tablet is the perfect solution.
Why is the Amazon Fire tablet great for kids? Basically, it was designed to allow families to use different types of content – videos, books, music, etc. – in a way that is very easy to control and manage.

Note. The following screenshots and settings are from the Fire HD 10 tablet. So if you want to know what to expect from the newest Amazon Fire tablet, these screenshots should be accurate for the latest model.
Set Up the Amazon Fire Tablet Child Profile
Parental controls are built into the system on the Amazon Fire tablet. This means that it will be much more difficult for your children to get around these controls.
To create new accounts for kids on your device, tap to open the Settings app.
There are several menus in this list that you will need to familiarize yourself with to manage your child’s use of the device. First, however, click on Profiles & Family Library to create a child account.
In the Child Profiles section, click Add Child Profile.
On the child’s profile page, enter the child’s name (first name only), their birthday, and an age-appropriate topic.
When finished, click “Add Profile”.
Limit Your Child’s Use of the Amazon Fire Tablet
Back in your profile and family library page, tap your child’s new profile to start managing it. Here you will see customization options:
- Daily goals (for example, watching at least a certain number of minutes of training videos).
- Manage your child’s tablet memory usage. space
- Adjust your child’s age filters (useful as they get older).
- Add or remove specific web pages or videos that they may or may not see
- Internet Settings.
- Camera settings.
- Allow your child to access the lock screen.
- Enable Amazon Kids + subscription.
The most effective setting on this profile page is the ability to set daily goals and time limits.
Here you can set the time of day they are allowed to view Amazon Kids content during the day.
You can also set educational goals for them that you want them to achieve every day. You can devote a certain amount of time to them every day, whenever they want:
- use educational applications;
- read educational books;
- listen to educational audiobooks with sound.
- Watch tutorial videos.
You can even block all entertainment content on Amazon Kids + until they reach your educational goals!
Of course, customizing controls on Amazon Kids + doesn’t really limit how long your child uses the tablet itself each day. So if you scroll down a bit, you’ll see the option to set your total screen usage time per day.
Instead, you also have the option to limit time by type of activity. This gives you more precise controls:
- Application Usage;
- Reading books;
- Listening to sound;
- Watching Videos
- Browsing the Web
Obviously, some activities are more productive and educational, so it makes sense to reduce restrictions on activities that serve to improve your child’s development.
Back on the profile page, if you click on Manage Storage, you can also keep track of what your child is saving to the tablet. Just tap “View Content” to see what they are saving to your device.
If they are using too much storage space, just click Archive Now to clear everything and clear memory.
Manage Your Child’s Content on the Amazon Fire Tablet
Back on your child’s profile page, click on Age Filters to specify what content they see in Amazon Kids + and in the Amazon web browser.
Set Age Filters to On. And set the slider to the appropriate age. It should be set to the age you entered in their original profile. However, some parents like it when their children see content suitable for children several years older. It depends on the maturity of your child – only you know what is right for him.
Since your child can’t install apps without a parental control password, you don’t need to worry about installing any other browser to bypass these controls.
Click Add Content on their profile page to add specific websites or videos that they can watch, even if their age filter usually blocks them.
Click Add Websites and use the search box to find a website and add it as approved content.
If the Amazon Kids team has already pre-approved this for their age group, you will see a message about it. You can select the star icon to add it to your child’s favorites.
Another place to fine tune your web content controls is to scroll down your child’s profile page and click on Restrict Web Content.
A window will open where you can view and edit the sites or videos you added.
Tap the Settings tab at the top to turn it on or off if you want your child to see whatever the Amazon Kids + team deems appropriate for their age. It is highly recommended that you leave this option enabled so that you do not have to spend so much time adding and removing certain content.
You can also prevent your child from visiting websites that store cookies.
Note. Disabling cookies can severely limit the functionality of websites, so limit the use of this feature unless absolutely necessary.
In the Internet Settings section of your child’s profile, simply click View Your Child’s Web Search History to open the parent dashboard where you can view any sites or content your child has visited in the past 90 days.
Setting and Adjusting Parental Controls
Back in the Settings menu, select Parental Controls to configure the parental controls and password for devices.
The first time you visit this section of the settings menu, you will need to set a new password.
It is important to do this before allowing your child to use the device for the first time. This password will block the installation of new applications or changing any device settings without using a parental control password.
In the Parental Controls menu, you can:
- manage the profiles of all your children on the device.
- Allow or prevent children from pinning apps to the home screen (some parents block this to avoid clutter)
- Restrict access to certain apps on the device
- Password protect certain actions such as using location services, changing settings, etc.
- Block access to the Amazon store and shopping
Content for Kids on the Amazon Fire Tablet
Now that you’ve set up and secured your tablet so your child can use it safely and responsibly, what can they do with it?
In all fairness, the Amazon Fire tablet is probably one of the most well-designed tablets for kids, judging by the content available alone.
In fact, adding an Amazon Kids account for your child is almost a basic requirement. It opens the door to a whole world of amazing content specifically made for kids. It is also an inexpensive option that is well worth the investment.
What can kids access on a tablet? First, the Kindle Store has a section called Children’s eBooks where you can find age-appropriate children’s books to help develop your child’s imagination.
If the Amazon Fire tablet is right for anything, book reading is at the very top of the list.
The Amazon Music app has a Kids Music section with a whole library of music for your child to listen to. And if you have an Amazon Echo, your child can ask Alexa to play music there.
Whether they’re spending the night with friends or relaxing after school, accessing age-appropriate music is a great way to introduce your child to music.
The Amazon app store has a Family section full of games for kids and other content to keep your child entertained on long car trips.
Note. To use the Amazon Fire tablet while traveling, you need to enable the hotspot function on your smartphone so that your child can connect to the Internet while traveling.
Finally, you have an Amazon Prime Video Kids section with kids shows and movies that will keep your child entertained with age-appropriate content.
